Do you offer an exterior wood paint?
We do offer the equivalent to a wood paint but with far better properties. The issue with a wood paint is over time it can flake, peel or crack. This can look very messy and is very difficult to maintain, as usually you have to sand back to bare wood before re-painting. Osmo offers a product called Country shades elements. This is a wood oil that offers an opaque finish (so a solid colour similar to paint) in a vast array of colours. Because this is a wood oil, it penetrates into the fibres of the wood so will not peel, flake or crack. It comes in some amazing colours and offers the highest UV protection exterior oil wood finish. Country shades come in four different variations, each with 30 colour choices. Osmo Country Shades Fire is inspired by nature with flames and Smokey tones in mind. Osmo Country Shades Earth is influenced by nature with Earthy pigments and Osmo Country Shades Air offers colours influenced by the sky, wind and weather. Osmo Country Shades Water gets its colour tones from the Sea, Rivers and Rain. They all offer a superb exterior wood oil finish with unique variations in colour tones.
What is the best exterior wood door finish?
There are several to choose from and this will depend on whether you are looking for a clear finish or a coloured finish. Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra offers a superb clear exterior wood finish with added protection against the sun rays. This exterior wood finish allows the timber to breathe and so reduces swelling and shrinkage. It is a water-repellent finish that will not crack, peel or flake. This can also come in many different tinted colours, please see our Osmo UV Protection Oil Tints listing. Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil is also a superb clear finish. It is made from a blend of natural oils & resins so offers a durable exterior wood finish. For exterior oily hardwoods such as Teak, Rosewood and Iroko, you may want to consider a more traditional finish like Teak oil. It produces a hard wearing, satin finish that nourishes, protects and enhances the natural beauty of the wood. There are so many to choose from, you are welcome to email for advice and we can try to suggest the best possible product for your project.
What exterior finish is best for cedar wood?
If the Cedar wood is new and newly sanded, it is recommended to allow a weathering process of around 12 weeks. Because Cedar is a wood species that is rich in wood extractives, you need to allow time for the extractive content to be washed out of the wood. This will allow the wood oil to be absorbed better. Once the weathering process is complete, it is good practice to clean the dried wood surface with methylated spirits to remove any excess extractives. You can also use a wood reviver power gel to remove any of the greying process that has occurred naturally. It is always best to apply WR Base Coat as an undercoat for full protection. Apply this generously to all sides and main areas and leave to fully dry. You can now either add a coat of UV protection oil clear, UV protection oil tints or Natural Oil Wood Stain and this will offer the best exterior wood finish.
