Wood floor oil is popular among homeowners and professional floor installers because it brings out the natural beauty of wood while also providing a durable finish. It is available in a variety of tints from clear to darker shades and can be used on most types of wood flooring, including solid wood, engineered wood and parquet flooring. The main advantage of wood floor oil over other types of finishes is that it can be easily repaired or re-oiled without having to completely strip and refinish the floor.

How Should I prepare the surface of wooden flooring before application of wood oil?

With most wood oils, the surface should be sanded in the direction of the wood grain with the final sanding in a 120 – 150 grit sandpaper. It is not recommended to sand finer than this as it will close the grain of the wood so not allowing the oil to penetrate correctly into the fibres of the wood grain. All scratches and marks should be removed and all dust removed before application.

Can I change the colour of my wooden floor?

Yes we offer a superb range of products to tint your wood floor to a colour of your choice. Osmo Offer Polyx oil tints or a wood wax finish ideal for colouring floors. Fiddes also offers a hard wax oil tints in some very popular colours. The correct application of each product should always be observed as some finishes are more suited to certain woods and we can always advise if necessary.

Should I oil my engineered wood floor?

Yes, oiling engineered wood floors is essential to keep them in good condition and protected from use. Without any coating, the wood can dry out and mark very easily. As most engineered floors are already oiled it is recommended to contact the manufacturer to find out what they have been initially coated with. You can then use the same finish to re-oil or work out the most suitable products for maintenance.

Is there anything I should pay attention to when coating wooden floors?

Due to their density and content of wood extractives, some hardwoods, such as Jatoba and Merbau, can absorb little wood oil. For such wood species, we recommend a clear coat with Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin, which deeply penetrates wood pores.

When is the floor accessible again after applying wood floor oil?

In general, flooring is accessible one day after the final coat has been applied. However, you must ensure that the final coat is dry to the touch. The surface will take approx. 3 weeks to cure completely. As a result, rugs and other objects that seal up the surface should first be placed on the surface after this time has expired.

How should I care for the floor after applying the oil?

Once the oil application on your floor has dried fully, it’s essential to maintain its beauty and longevity through proper care. Here’s how you can keep your floor in pristine condition:

  1. Regular Cleaning: Use a vacuum or a soft broom to remove any dirt or debris that could potentially scratch the surface. It’s important to keep the floor free of grit.
  2. Dealing with Spills and Scuffs: Any spills should be wiped up promptly with a damp cloth to prevent staining or damage. For scuffs, gentle rubbing with a damp cloth can often remove the mark. We do also offer products for daily cleaning and maintenance like Osmo Wash and Care that can help with the removal of some marks and scuffs whilst protecting your wood flooring.
  3. Addressing Scratches: If scratches appear, you don’t need to worry. The beauty of oiled floors is their ease of repair. Simply repeat the oiling process on the affected area to restore its appearance.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your oiled floor remains as impressive as the day it was finished. Regular care is key to prolonging its durability and aesthetic appeal.
