Description

Nitromors Paint and Varnish Remover is a powerful, fast-acting paint stripper designed to remove most paints, varnishes and lacquers. Its thick, non-drip gel formula makes it particularly useful on vertical surfaces where a conventional liquid paint stripper may run or drip.

The green-coloured gel makes it easy to see where Nitromors has been applied, helping to achieve an even application. The formula is dichloromethane-free and can be washed off with water or solvent depending on the surface and application.

Nitromors is suitable for DIY, furniture restoration, woodworking, metal restoration and general renovation projects where existing paint, varnish or lacquer needs to be removed before refinishing.

Uses for Nitromors

Nitromors Paint and Varnish Remover can be used for removing old coatings from a wide range of restoration and DIY projects, including:

• Removing old paint from wooden furniture
• Stripping varnish from wood
• Removing lacquer from suitable surfaces

• Removing coatings from wooden mouldings

Suitable Surfaces

Nitromors Paint and Varnish Remover is suitable for use on:

• Wood
• Metal

It is particularly useful on vertical surfaces because the thick gel is designed to cling to the surface rather than immediately running down.

Do not use on plastics or GRP. For plastics or substrates of unknown composition, compatibility should be checked carefully on a small, inconspicuous area before use.

How to Use Nitromors

Always read the instructions on the container before use and ensure the working area is properly ventilated.

1. Prepare the Area

Protect surrounding surfaces and items that are not being stripped with a suitable polythene sheet. Remove dust and loose material from the surface before applying Nitromors.

Extinguish all ignition sources, including fires, boilers, cookers and pilot lights. Do not smoke.

2. Apply Nitromors

Pour the required amount into a suitable container and replace the screw cap immediately. Apply a thick 2–3mm coat using a dabbing action. Do not brush the product out thinly.

Work on areas of no more than approximately 0.5m² at a time.

3. Allow the Paint to Blister

Once the paint begins to blister, usually after approximately 5–10 minutes, apply a second coat and work it into the blistered coating.

Leave the product to work for up to approximately 40 minutes. If the Nitromors begins to dry before the coating has softened sufficiently, re-apply as necessary.

4. Remove the Softened Coating

Once the paint or varnish has softened and blistered, remove it carefully using a suitable scraper. An old nylon toothbrush can be useful for working into difficult or detailed areas.

Repeat the process where necessary for particularly stubborn or multiple layers of paint.

Removing Paint, Varnish and Lacquer

For ingrained paint and difficult areas, wire wool dipped in Nitromors can be used carefully to help loosen the remaining coating.

When stripping fine or laminated wood, use white spirit and wire wool where appropriate to avoid raising the grain. For other suitable surfaces, the stripped area can be washed with detergent and cold water using a nylon scourer.

Nitromors can be particularly useful when preparing old furniture, doors, wooden components and metal objects for a new finish.

After Stripping

After the softened paint or varnish has been removed, clean the surface thoroughly using the appropriate method for the substrate and allow it to dry completely.

Once the surface is fully dry, lightly rub it down with fine sandpaper or suitable wire wool before applying a new finish.

Do not sand old paint unless you are certain it does not contain lead. Paint applied before 1960 may contain lead, so special precautions are required when dealing with older coatings.

Coverage

The 2 litre container covers up to approximately 5m², depending on the thickness of application and the type and number of coatings being removed. This is approximately three door sides under suitable conditions.

Please Note

Nitromors is a powerful paint and varnish remover and should be used with care. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility with the surface and existing coating.

Do not use in direct sunlight or in enclosed spaces such as cellars or floor wells without adequate ventilation. Protect surrounding surfaces from the product.

When stripping older painted surfaces, be aware that historic paint may contain lead. Do not sand suspected lead-based paint.

For intricate mouldings, carvings and detailed furniture restoration, a thinner paint and varnish remover specifically designed to penetrate detailed areas may be more suitable.

CLEANING UP: Collect waste in newspaper, leave outside in safe place until dry. Dispose of in a dustbin. Clean tools etc. in warm soapy water and avoid contact with plastic sinks or baths.

Health and Safety

DANGER – Highly flammable liquid and vapour. Causes serious eye damage and may cause damage to organs.

Keep out of reach of children. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking.

Do not breathe vapour or spray. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.

Wear suitable protective gloves, protective clothing and eye/face protection. Ensure good ventilation and avoid unnecessary skin contact.

Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking.

If in eyes: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do, then continue rinsing. Immediately seek medical attention or contact a Poison Centre/doctor.

Contains 1,3-dioxolane and methanol.
