Floor Wax and Wood Floor Finishes

Our range of floor wax and wood floor finishes includes traditional floor waxes, liquid wax polishes and hard wax oils for suitable wooden flooring. These products can be used for finishing new floors, maintaining existing finishes or refreshing the appearance of timber flooring.

The right product depends on the condition of the floor, the existing finish, the level of wear and the type of appearance you want to achieve. Always check the individual product instructions before applying a finish to your floor.

Wood Floor Wax

Wood floor wax is a traditional way of finishing and maintaining suitable wooden flooring. Floor wax can enhance the natural appearance of timber and, depending on the product, provide a soft sheen that can be maintained by regular buffing and reapplication.

Liberon Floor Wax is suitable for new and reclaimed wooden floors as well as cork flooring. It produces a traditional soft natural sheen and can be buffed after application.

Hard Wax Oil for Wooden Floors

Hard wax oil combines oils and waxes to provide a durable finish for suitable wooden surfaces. It is widely used on wooden flooring where a more hard-wearing finish is required than a traditional furniture wax.

Our range includes Osmo Polyx Oil and Fiddes Hard Wax Oil in clear and tinted finishes, along with specialist versions for particular applications.

Floor Wax for Existing Wooden Floors

If your wooden floor already has a suitable wax finish, a traditional floor wax or liquid wax polish may be appropriate for maintaining and refreshing the surface. Antiquax Original Liquid Wax Floor Polish, for example, is designed for timber floors and panelling and can be buffed after application.

Before applying any new floor wax, make sure the existing surface is clean and compatible with the chosen product. Previous layers of polish or other finishes may need to be removed or prepared first.

Floor Wax for Newly Sanded Floors

Newly sanded wooden floors need a finish that is appropriate for the level of use they will receive. A hard wax oil for floors can be a suitable option where a durable oil-and-wax finish is required.

Products such as Osmo Polyx Oil and Fiddes Hard Wax Oil are available in clear and coloured options, allowing you to protect the timber while also influencing its final appearance.

Clear and Tinted Floor Finishes

Floor finishes are available in both clear and tinted formulations. Clear products can help retain the natural appearance of the timber, while tinted hard wax oils can alter or enhance the colour of the floor.

Osmo Polyx Oil Tints and Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints are available in a range of finishes and colours. Always test a tinted product on a small area or spare piece of timber first, as the final colour will vary according to the species, condition and preparation of the wood.

Floor Wax for Parquet Flooring

Floor wax for parquet flooring can be used where the product is suitable for the existing timber and finish. Antiquax Original Liquid Wax Floor Polish is specifically suitable for wooden flooring including parquet flooring.

When treating older parquet floors, take particular care to establish what finish is already present before applying a new wax or polish.

Floor Wax Maintenance

Maintaining a wooden floor depends on the type of finish already applied. Traditional waxed floors may benefit from regular cleaning, buffing and occasional reapplication of a suitable floor wax. Floors finished with hard wax oil should be maintained using products recommended for that particular finish.

For example, the Osmo range includes floor maintenance products intended for maintaining suitable Osmo-finished floors. Avoid assuming that a conventional furniture wax or polish is suitable for every type of floor finish.

Choosing the Right Floor Wax

When choosing a floor wax or hard wax oil, consider whether the floor is newly sanded or already finished, the type of timber, the amount of foot traffic and the appearance you want to achieve.

For traditional waxed floors, a suitable floor wax or liquid wax polish may be appropriate. For newly prepared floors and areas subject to greater everyday wear, a hard wax oil may be more suitable. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparation, application, drying and ongoing maintenance.
