Frequently Asked Questions
Briwax is used to clean, revive, protect and enhance wooden furniture and interior woodwork. Depending on the product, it can be used on antique furniture, bare wood, finished furniture and other suitable wooden surfaces.
Briwax Wax Polish is the most versatile choice for furniture, particularly when you want to add colour as well as a protective wax finish. It is available in a range of shades to complement different types of wood. This comes in a variety of colours and will enhance the appearance of the wood whist adding a protective layer. This wax polish is used on modern and antique furniture on all woods but works especially well on Pine and Oak. With the large colour choice, you can add a slight tone to your timber and this can also help to cover minor scratches and marks. There is also a clear wax polish option to keep your furniture as natural as possible in tone that is easy to apply and create a beautiful sheen.
Briwax wax finishes provide some resistance to moisture but are not waterproof. For areas exposed to regular water, such as kitchen worktops, a suitable hard wax oil or other durable wood finish is a better choice. Osmo Top Oil or Fiddes hard wax oil – Tints are both superb products that come with a selection of tinted shades for you to choose from.
Yes. Briwax is widely used for antique furniture restoration. Choose the product according to the existing finish and the result you want to achieve, and always test on a small inconspicuous area first.
No. Wax can prevent varnish from bonding correctly to the surface. If you want to varnish previously waxed furniture, the wax should first be thoroughly removed and the surface prepared correctly.
Yes, Briwax polish is easy to apply if done correctly. If you are applying to bare untreated wood, simply apply the wax in thin coats, using a lint free cloth in the direction of the grain. Leave the wax to dry for around 5 minutes and buff up to a nice sheen. You can repeat this process several times to improve the sheen, colour and protection of your finish. For an existing finish that you want to clean and restore or revive then try using a polish reviver first. The polish reviver is used to remove dirt, grime and will revive the existing polish. Once cleaned, this will make waxing your wood easier and will offer better results.
