How to Use Osmo Polyx Oil Clear Original

  1. The Wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 18%).
  2. Osmo Polyx Oil Original is ready to use. Do not thin.
  3. Stir well before use.
  4. Clean old micro porous stains thoroughly.
  5. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed.
  6. As a general rule, wear a dust mask during sanding works.
  7. Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes in wood with a Wood Filler.
  8. Sand wood surfaces carefully. Begin with coarse sandpaper – final sanding work for flooring P120- 150, for furniture P180-240.
  9. Before oiling the surface, remove sanding dust with a broom or vacuum.
  10. The finished surface is influenced by several factors, including the condition of the wood. Therefore, a trial application is always required, especially for unfamiliar surfaces.
  11. Apply with an Osmo Flat Brush or Osmo Floor Brush.
  12. Apply thinly along the wood grain and spread well.
  13. Allow to dry for approx. 8-10 hours under good ventilation.
  14. After drying, quickly apply a second coat also thinly.
  15. When renovating or re-coating an already oiled surface, one coat applied to the clean and dry surface is usually sufficient.
  16. The Drying time is approximately 8-10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23 °C/ 50 % rel. humidity). Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time. Ventilate well while drying.
  17. It will be approximately 2-3 weeks until the the surface is fully cured

Cleaning and Maintenance

Once your surfaces have been treated with Osmo Polyx Oil, it is recommended to use the surface as little as possible for around 1 week to fully cure. It is not recommended to regular household cleaners as they are not designed to clean oiled wooden surfaces and can damage them over time. Remove dust and dirt by vacuum cleaner or broom. For regular daily cleaning on wood floors, it is recommended to use Osmo Wash and Care. Simply add the Wash and Care to water and clean the floor with a damp (not wet) mop and wipe dry immediately. For wood surfaces like furniture or worktops use Osmo Spray Cleaner as this will clean your wooden surfaces without removing any oils and waxes, so will not dry the wood out. This will also remove many minor marks. It is also recommended to dust on a regular basis using a plain lint free cloth. If you accidentally scratch or damage the finish, you can either lightly sand the affected area and re-apply the same wood oil that you originally used. For lighter marks or scuffs, this can usually be cleaned by using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner.

Please note

1 litre covers approx. 24 m² with one coat. Coverage depends significantly on the condition of the wood. All information refers to smooth and planed/sanded surfaces. Other surfaces may lead to differences in coverage

Store up to 5 years and longer if can is kept dry and closed tightly. If thickened by frost, store for 24-36 hours at room temperature before use

Oils enhance the natural tone of wood (permanent wet effect). Applying the product too generously and insufficient ventilation lead to delays in drying. For dark and extractive-rich hardwoods (e.g. Wenge, Merbau, Jatoba etc.), we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin. A trial application is recommended.

For cork surfaces, due to their high absorbency please ensure that the wood finish is applied especially thinly. On cork, longer drying times are to be taken into consideration (at least 24 hours).

Apply max. one coat thinly to cabinet interiors and drawers with a cloth.

Wood surfaces treated with Polyx Oil are easy to maintain. Remove debris with a broom or a vacuum cleaner. To clean, add Osmo Wash and Care concentrate to mop water and clean the surface with a damp (not wet!) mop.

To refresh and clean intensively, use Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner when necessary. If a higher gloss level is desired, after thoroughly drying apply Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner thinly and polish when dry.

Questions and Answers

What is Osmo Polyx Oil used for?

Osmo Polyx Oil Original is a remarkable solution that provides exceptional protection for a wide range of wooden surfaces. It is specially formulated to safeguard various wooden floors like solid wood, plank, strip, OSB, and cork flooring, as well as furniture surfaces.

Is Osmo Polyx Oil suitable for kitchen worktops?

Yes, Osmo Polyx Oil clear is suitable for kitchen worktops, along with other wooden surfaces but Osmo does offer a Top Oil especially for kitchen worktops. This top oil comes in various tinted shades and in a useful sized tin so may be a better option.

Is Osmo Polyx Oil suitable for wooden doors?

Yes, Osmo Polyx Oil is designed for solid wooden floors, doors, kitchen worktops, furniture, and internal wood but with some veneered doors you have to be more careful. Some oils can actually damage the veneer on the door to to the solvents melting the glue under the veneer. The best option would be Osmo door oil as this has less solvents in the ingredients so will not damage the veneer on the door and is safe for use on solid or Oak veneered doors.

Can this wood oil be used on all types of wood?

Polyx oil can be used on most woods but for exotic or oily hardwoods, Osmo Wood Wax Finish Extra Thin 1101 is the better solution as this is a thinner solution so is more tailored to the unique requirements of these wood types. This is best to be applied with a lint free cloth rather than a brush as you want several thin coats rather than one thick coat so they can harden between each layer.

Can Polyx oil be used in wet areas such as Bathrooms or Kitchens?

This incredible product is crafted with a blend of natural plant oils and waxes, including sunflower oil, soya oil, thistle oil, carnauba wax, and candelilla wax. Additionally, it incorporates paraffin, siccatives (drying agents), and water-repellent additives, ensuring reliable performance and long-lasting durability. This will add very good water resistance but to maintain its high water resistance in areas exposed to moisture, we recommend applying a base coat of Osmo Wood Protector 4006. This additional step enhances its protective qualities, making it an excellent choice for bathrooms and kitchens.

Can Polyx Oil be used on MDF?

Yes, Osmo Polyx Oil clear is suitable for use on untreated MDF along with some other particle boards like chipboard and engineered wood. Osmo Wood Wax Finish can sometimes be a better option as this is also a suitable option for the protection for edge glued panels, chipboard and MDF. It is always to test a small area first to ensure compatibility and apply the first coat thinly.

Can you use this on an Oak Fireplace?

Yes, you can use Osmo Polyx Oil to apply onto an oak fire place but when you use wood oils around heat, it can dry out quicker over time. This means you will need to apply more regular, thin coats to act as a moisturiser to the wood and stop it drying out. This will also ensure you keep a protective coat to your wood. You can simply lightly apply the wood oil using a lint free cloth on regular intervals and this should keep your wood and finish in good condition.
