Wood Stripping Kit for Furniture Restoration
Our Wood Stripping Kit contains a selection of products and tools to help prepare suitable wooden surfaces for restoration and refinishing. Whether you are restoring an old table, stripping a cabinet or removing a worn varnish finish, the kit brings together the main materials needed for the stripping stage of the project.
Removing an old finish can reveal the timber beneath and provide a suitable surface for a new wax, oil, stain, varnish or French polish. However, stripping is not always necessary: if an existing finish is sound, cleaning and reviving it may be a better way to preserve the character and patina of antique furniture.
What Is Included in the Wood Stripping Kit?
- Harris Ultimate Stripping Knife – 100 mm: A stripping knife for helping remove softened finishes from suitable surfaces.
- Liberon Fine Wood Stripper – 500 ml: A gel wood stripper designed to remove old paint and varnish finishes from suitable wood and metal surfaces.
- Liberon Wax and Polish Remover – 250 ml: For removing wax and polish residues as part of the surface preparation process, following the product instructions.
- Liberon Steel Wool – 1 kg, Grade 2: Useful for helping remove softened finishes, particularly from detailed areas and mouldings.
How to Strip Wood Before Refinishing
Good preparation is important when restoring wooden furniture. The exact method will depend on the existing finish, the type of timber and the condition of the piece.
- Assess the existing finish: Check whether the furniture needs stripping or whether the finish can be cleaned and revived. Retaining a sound original finish can help preserve antique character.
- Prepare the furniture: Where practical, remove handles, hinges and other fittings. Protect glass, adjacent surfaces and any areas that should not come into contact with the stripper.
- Apply the wood stripper: Follow the instructions on the Liberon Fine Wood Stripper packaging, applying it to a suitable surface and allowing the recommended working time.
- Remove the softened finish: Use the stripping knife carefully on suitable flat areas. Grade 2 steel wool can help with softened finish in mouldings and detailed areas. Work with the grain where appropriate and avoid damaging the timber.
- Repeat if necessary: Several applications may be required where multiple layers of paint or varnish are present.
- Clean and prepare the surface: Use the Wax and Polish Remover for removing residues and neutralising the surface. Allow the timber to dry thoroughly before further preparation.
- Prepare for the new finish: Once dry, inspect the wood and gently sand or rub down as appropriate before applying a compatible finish.

Safety When Stripping Wood
Wood-stripping products require careful handling. Read the labels and safety instructions for each product before use.
