How to use Liberon Superior Danish Oil

For Interior woodwork

1. For Interior woodwork, ensure the surface is bare and unfinished. Remove any wax finishes with Liberon Wax and Polish Remover and any varnish finishes with Liberon Fine Wood Stripper.

2. If required stain the wood with Liberon Palette Wood Dye before oiling.

3. Shake well before use. Apply with a soft brush and allow penetrating for at least ten minutes before wiping off any excess with a cloth.

4. Now let it dry for a minimum of six hours and then you can apply more coats if required.

5. We recommend a minimum of two to three coats.

6. For best results gently rub between each coat with our Fine 0000 Steel Wool.

7. If you are applying in more wet areas like bathrooms and Kitchens, you will need to apply more coats of Liberon Superior Danish Oil to make sure of sufficient protection.

8. Once dry and fully cured the wood may be cleaned using a damp cloth and spills should be wiped up immediately. You should re oil at least once per year for more for long term protection. Clean off any surface grime, moulds etc. (sand if required) before re-oiling.

For exterior woodwork

1. For exterior woodwork, ensure the surface is clean, dry, unfinished and free from mould etc.

2. Apply the same as above but ensure you apply the minimum of five coats.

3. Exposed areas will require many more coats for extra protection. Exterior timbers need to be oiled on a regular basis, we recommend at least twice a year but lightly sand before re application.

4. Once complete, Surfaces may be cleaned using a damp cloth and spills should be wiped up immediately. For stubborn stains a mild detergent can be used. Surfaces need to be re-oiled at least once per year or more, depending upon usage.

Always test the product on spare surface of inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result. Always follow manufacturer’s instruction.

Please Note –

Liberon Superior Danish Oil may darken some woods and blackening may occur on some external timbers. Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour. Store Superior Danish Oil at a temperature above 5°C and always replace the lid when not in use. Do not leave impregnated cloths in bundles as Oily cloths can self-combust. Before discarding the cloths lay them flat outside to dry to avoid a fire hazard. Superior Danish Oil is not suitable for use on external Oak, Pure Tung Oil is recommended for this purpose. If the excess is not removed and the surface becomes sticky, wipe with white spirit to remove the sticky film and allow to dry before continuing. The oil can deteriorate over time.

Each 1 Litre will cover approximately 10-12 m2

Questions and Answers

What is the difference between Liberon Danish Oil and Liberon Finishing Oil?

There are two main differences between these products. Danish oil can be used on interior wood and exterior wood (excluding exterior Oak, for this use Pure Tung Oil) whereas Liberon Finishing oil is for interior wood only. Finishing Oil is thinner as it is made from a combination of tung oil and resins, so is more for use on furniture to create a water resistant finish. Danish oil is slightly thicker so it can be a little more difficult to work with if you do not apply this thinly, but you still get a superb finish and wood protection. Danish Oil is more well known for use on wood due to its ability to penetrate the wood and enhance the natural grain.

Does Liberon Superior Danish Oil dry hard?

Liberon Danish oil will dry hard once fully cured. It is a hard drying oil that creates a hard wearing, water resistant finish but is quite slow at drying compared to some more modern alternatives like Hard Wax Oil. It is recommended to leave danish oil to dry for at least 7 days to fully cure.

Is Liberon Superior Danish Oil food safe?

As with most danish oils, as long as the oil has had time to fully dry and cure then this should be food safe as it is designed to be used on interior wood like on kitchen worktops as it is Water, Heat and Alcohol resistant. Unfortunately they do not state this on the label so if you want a 100% food safe wood oil then you may want to consider using Osmo Top Oil (as this is stated on the packaging ‘food safe’).

How much will Liberon 2.5L Danish Oil cover

Each 1 Litre of Liberon Danish oil will cover approximately 10-12 m2 with one coat, so a 2.5 Litre tin will cover approximately 25-30 m2. This is with one coat and it is recommended to apply at least 2 to 3 coats for full protection.

Will Liberon superior danish oil 1 litre be enough for a Kitchen Worktop?

Yes, 1 litre should be plenty to treat a full kitchen worktop. With worktops, ensure you apply plenty of coats of oil to create good protection against daily wear and tear. It is recommended to apply at least 3 coats, but it may be best to apply more and treat this on a regular basis to keep the wood well protected.
