How to Use Liberon Superior Danish Oil

1. Proper preparation is essential when applying Liberon Superior Danish Oil.
2. The surface should be clean, dry, bare and free from previous waxes, polishes and varnishes.
3. Remove existing wax finishes using Liberon Wax and Polish Remover. Existing varnish finishes can be removed using Liberon Fine Wood Stripper, where appropriate.
4. If required, the timber can be stained with Liberon Palette Wood Dye before applying Danish Oil.
5. For exterior timber, remove mould, decayed timber and grey weathered wood before oiling. Grey or deteriorated timber left beneath the oil can contribute to blackening.
6. Shake the tin thoroughly before use.
7. Apply Danish Oil with a soft brush or lint-free cotton cloth.
8. Allow the oil to penetrate for approximately 5–10 minutes.
9. Wipe away all excess oil with a clean lint-free cloth.
10. Allow the surface to dry for a minimum of 5 hours.
11. Apply further coats as required.
12. Lightly rub between coats with fine Grade 0000 steel wool where appropriate.
13. Allow the final finish to cure fully before heavy use.

Using Danish Oil on Interior Woodwork

For interior woodwork, apply at least three coats of Liberon Superior Danish Oil for good protection.

Surfaces in kitchens, bathrooms and other areas exposed to moisture may require additional coats.

Allow each coat to dry before applying the next and wipe away excess oil thoroughly.

Once the finish has fully cured, the wood can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Spills should always be wiped up promptly.

Using Danish Oil on Exterior Woodwork

For exterior woodwork, the surface must be clean, dry and free from mould, decay and weathered timber.

A minimum of four coats is recommended for exterior woodwork, with additional coats applied to exposed areas where greater protection is required.

Exterior timber should be maintained regularly and re-oiled at least once a year, or more frequently depending on exposure and use.

Important: Liberon Superior Danish Oil is not suitable for exterior oak. For this we recommend Liberon Pure Tung Oil for exterior oak instead.

Maintaining Danish Oil Finishes

One of the advantages of Danish Oil is that it is relatively easy to maintain.

Clean the surface with a damp cloth and wipe up spills promptly. For exterior furniture, remove dirt, mould and surface contamination before re-oiling.

When the finish begins to look dry or tired, lightly prepare the surface and apply another coat of Danish Oil.

We recommend re-oiling surfaces approximately once a year or more frequently depending on use and exposure.

Finishing Oil is designed for interior woodwork and is particularly suitable where you need a durable, water-resistant finish for surfaces such as tables and worktops.

If you need an oil for exterior wood, Danish Oil is the more appropriate option, except for exterior oak where Libéron recommends Pure Tung Oil.

If you need a hard-wearing finish for a heavily used interior worktop or table, Liberon Finishing Oil may be the better choice.

Danish Oil vs Pure Tung Oil

Liberon Superior Danish Oil and Liberon Pure Tung Oil are both penetrating wood oils, but they are not the same product.

Danish Oil is a blend of Tung Oil and other natural oils. It dries relatively quickly and is suitable for most interior and exterior wood.

Pure Tung Oil is particularly suited to exterior oak and provides a more natural, traditional oil finish.

Choose Liberon Pure Tung Oil if you are specifically treating exterior oak. Choose Danish Oil for general interior and exterior wood where a faster-drying blended oil is preferred.

Liberon Superior Danish Oil has a relatively quick drying time compared with many traditional penetrating oils. It has a minimum drying time of approximately 5 hours between coats. Although the surface may feel dry after this period, the oil continues to harden and cure after application. For maximum durability, allow the finish plenty of time to fully cure before subjecting it to heavy use.

Is Liberon Danish Oil suitable for exterior wood?

Liberon Danish Oil may darken some woods and blackening may occur on some external timbers. Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour. Store Superior Danish Oil at a temperature above 5°C and always replace the lid when not in use. Do not leave impregnated cloths in bundles as oily cloths can self-combust. Before discarding the cloths lay them flat outside to dry to avoid a fire hazard. Superior Danish Oil is not suitable for use on external Oak, Pure Tung Oil is recommended for this purpose. If the excess is not removed and the surface becomes sticky, wipe with white spirit to remove the sticky film and allow to dry before continuing. The oil can deteriorate over time.
