It is suitable for both hardwoods and softwoods and can be used on furniture, floors, doors, cupboards, frames and other interior woodwork.

Palette Wood Dye is available in a range of traditional wood shades, and different colours can be mixed together to create your own individual colour.

The dye is also EN 71 Part 3 approved for use on toys, making it suitable for appropriate children’s wooden toys when used.

How to Use Liberon Palette Wood Dye

  1. Ensure the surface is thoroughly sanded, bare, dry and free from dust.
  2. Shake the tin well before use.
  3. If more than one tin is required, mix the tins together first to ensure a uniform colour.
  4. Apply the Palette Wood Dye fairly quickly along the grain using a foam applicator or brush.
  5. Wipe away excess dye with a clean, dry cotton cloth before it dries to even out the colour.
  6. When working on large surfaces such as floors, work on a small section at a time to avoid overlap marks.
  7. Allow to dry for approximately 2 hours.
  8. Apply a second coat if a stronger colour is required.

More than two coats of dye may affect the final finish. Always allow the dye to dry thoroughly before applying your chosen finishing product.

Liberon Palette Wood Dye may be added to Liberon Natural Finish Interior Varnish or a large range of coloured, water based varnishes. It can also be applied before polishing or waxing to achieve a uniform colour.

Palette Wood Dye for Furniture

Liberon Palette Wood Dye is ideal for colouring bare wooden furniture.

It can be used after stripping or sanding to restore colour, change the shade of timber or help blend furniture to match existing pieces.

Because the dye remains transparent, the natural grain and character of the wood remain visible rather than being covered by an opaque coating.

For furniture restoration, always test the chosen colour on a spare piece or an inconspicuous area first, as different types of wood can produce different results.

Palette Wood Dye for Floors

Liberon Palette Wood Dye can be used on suitable interior wooden floors to change or enhance the colour of bare timber.

When staining a large floor, work in manageable sections and avoid allowing the edges of each section to dry before joining the next area. This helps reduce visible overlap marks.

Once completely dry, the dyed floor can be finished with a suitable floor varnish or other compatible finishing system.

Using Palette Wood Dye Under Wax

Liberon Palette Wood Dye can be applied before waxing to give bare wood a more uniform colour.

Allow the dye to dry completely before applying wax.

The White Liberon Palette Wood Dye can also be used underneath Liberon Liming Wax when you want to create a lighter, more pronounced whitewashed appearance. Opening the grain first with a suitable liming brush can help achieve a stronger limed effect.

Using Palette Wood Dye Under Varnish

Palette Wood Dye can be used before applying a compatible water based varnish.

It can also be added to certain Liberon water based varnishes to create coloured or tinted finishes. Always follow the instructions for the particular varnish being used.

Take care when applying a water based finish over Palette Wood Dye. Keep brush strokes to a minimum because excessive brushing can lift or disturb the colour.

Liberon Palette Wood Dye vs Spirit Wood Dye

Liberon Palette Wood Dye is water based, making it a good choice when you want a low-solvent wood dye for interior projects.

Liberon Spirit Wood Dye is ethanol based and is another popular option for furniture restoration and colouring new, old and reclaimed timber.

Palette Wood Dye is particularly useful when a water based product is preferred, while Spirit Wood Dye can provide deeper penetration and is often chosen for traditional furniture restoration.

Do not mix water based and spirit based dyes together.
