How to use Fiddes Hard Wax Oil
- Ensure that the surface is clean, dry and free from any old finishes before applying the oil. Where necessary strip off previously finishes with a paint stripper and then wipe over with white spirit to remove any greased in the timber.
- Fill in any small holes, chips or cracks with our wax filler stick in the most suitable colour.
- Sand the wood with a fine grade of sanding paper in the direction of the grain and then remove the dust.
- If you are wanting to add a colour to your timber, we do supply all the fiddes colour tins here. Please see the instructions on how to add the tints before applying.
- Stir the Fiddes wax oil thoroughly before use and use a good quality soft bristle brush to apply in a well ventilated room. Apply even amounts of oil in the direction of the wood grain where possible and remove any excess oil immediately with a clean lint free cloth if necessary. We recommend the minimum of two thin coats but on more softer woods you can apply more.
- Leave to dry for the minimum of six hours between each coat of oil. Before each additional coat, very lightly sand with very fine sanding paper as this will give you a smoother finish. Vacuum and dust before the next coat of oil to stop any contamination.
- When you are happy with the final results, leave over night to thoroughly dry and then lightly buff to a nice sheen.
- As with all finishes, we always recommend to do a small test area first to ensure you are happy with the finish and results. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions at all times.
- For an extra nice sheen try waxing with Fiddes mellow wax, this works particularly well on furniture.
- A single application will cover approximately 20-24 square meters per litre, depending on how dry your timber is and if it is a softwood or hardwood. It will saturate into softwood more so may require further coats.
We supply three different sizes –
250ml tin – this will cover approximately 5 – 5 square meters so perfect for a sample test or very small projects.
1 Litre tin – This will cover approximately 20 to 24 square meters per single application, depending on how dry your timber is and how much it soaks into the wood. This is the ideal size if you are coating a piece of furniture like a kitchen table or worktops etc.
2.5 Litre tin – This will cover approximately 50 to 60 square meters per single application, depending on how dry your timber is and how much it soaks into the wood. This is the ideal size for coating large floors, doors, skirting boards etc.

Can you Renovate / Repair Fiddes hard wax oil
- Yes, lighter marks and scuffs, you can usually remove them by buffing out with a clean cloth
- For Light damage, like worn areas or stains, this can usually be resolved by lightly sanding and re-applying a fresh coat of Hard wax Oil If you have used a tint or wood stain under the finish, be careful not to sand through the colour back to the bare wood.
- For bad damage like scratches, this can be repaired in two ways. First try to wax fill the area using a coloured wax filler stick. If this does not work, then you will have to sand the affected area, back to the bare wood and re oil.
Can you use Fiddes Hardwax oil on Cork Floors?
Yes you can use this on Cork tiles. For best results, coat them before fitting to your floor. This is to avoid overlapping of the edges. Because of the nature of cork, it will take several weeks to fully harden, to the full durable finish. Leave to dry, at least 24 hours between coats.

MR D B –
Superb wax oil. This is more like a thin varnish and is easy to apply following the instructions. It’s essential to rub down gently between coats and to make sure all dust is carefully removed with a tack cloth before recoating. Amazing results and very durable. Best stuff for the job in my opinion.
