How to use Fiddes Hard Wax Oil Tints

  1. First, ensure that the surface is dry, clean and free from any previous finishes before applying the desired colour of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil tint.
  2. If necessary strip off old finishes with a paint stripper and wipe over with white spirit to remove any grease in the timber.
  3. Fill in any small holes, chips or cracks with our wax filler stick in the most suitable colour.
  4. Sand the wood with a fine grade of sanding paper in the direction of the grain and then remove dust.
  5. Stir the chosen Fiddes wax oil tint thoroughly before use and use a good quality soft bristle brush to apply in a well ventilated room.
  6. Apply the oil tint evenly in the direction of the wood grain where possible and remove excess oil immediately with a clean lint free cloth if necessary.
  7. The minimum of two thin coats of the coloured tints are recommended but on softer woods or for a fuller tint you can apply more.
  8. We recommend to leave to dry for the minimum of six hours between each coat of oil.
  9. Before each additional coat, lightly sand over with very fine sanding paper as this will give a smoother finish.
  10. Vacuum and dust before the next coat of oil to stop any contamination to be caused.
  11. Fiddes recommend 1 coat of the coloured tint and then to finish by coating with 1 coat of Hard Wax Oil Clear as this will offer the best protection to your wood.
  12. If using Fiddes hard wax oil tints in the shades of White or Belgium Grey, they should have a top coat of Clear Hard Wax Oil ‘Natural’ on top to finish.
  13. When you are happy with the final results, leave overnight to completely dry and then lightly buff to a nice sheen.

Please note

As with all finishes, we always recommend to test a small area first to ensure you are happy with the finish and results. Ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions at all times.

For an extra nice sheen try waxing with Fiddes mellow wax, this works particularly well on furniture.

A single application will cover approximately 20-24 square meters per litre, depending on how dry your timber is and if it is a softwood or hardwood. It will saturate into softwood more so may require more coats.

Questions and Answers

What is the best way to protect Fiddes Hard Wax Oil White?

If you are using the Fiddes hard wax oil tints in the shade ‘white’ then you should use a top coat of hard wax oil ‘Natural’ as this is perfect to protect the white tinted shade without adding any yellow. The top coat will add a more robust, durable finish and this is important on lighter shades. Fiddes hardwax oil Natural is also for use on lighter timbers, such as ash, sycamore and maple where a clearer, more natural tone is required.

Can I use Fiddes hard wax oil tints for oak worktops?

Yes, this product is ideal for use on kitchen worktops as it creates a water and heat resistant finish that is easy to maintain. It is child and food safe once fully dry. We also offer the full range of colours from Light Oak to Rustic Oak that can look amazing as well as creating a durable interior wood finish.

My new table has had one coat, can I put another coat on the top to make it more hard wearing?

Yes, we do recommend to apply 1 coat of the coloured tinted hardwax oil and then to finish by coating with 1 coat of Clear or Natural (depending on the shade that you have used) as this will offer the most durable finish. If you want to intensify the colour you can also add two coats of the tinted colour and this will also add more protection to your table.

How long does Hardwax oil take to dry?

The average drying time is 4 – 6 hours in warm, dry, well ventilated conditions. It will take longer to fully cure, so be careful for around a week before over using the area that you have treated. Once fully cured, you will have a hard-wearing finish.

What grade of sanding paper do I use to prep the wood before application of Hard Wax Oil Tints?

This will depend on how rough the wood is, and if you are preparing hard wood or soft wood. If you are treating a hard wood, then you would finish with a 150 grit sanding paper to smooth the wood. If you are dealing with a soft wood, then I would sand this in a 150 grit and then finish with a 180 grit. This is to close the grain of the wood, so the oil will not soak in too much. You need a smooth finish with a closed grain to create an even finish, especially with tinted hard wax oils. Before application, ensure you fully remove any sanding dust as this will also affect the final finish.

After applying Belgium Grey hard wax oil, do i need to varnish it afterwards to seal it?

With the tinted shade ‘Belgium Grey’ it is recommended to use a top coat of ‘Natural’ to seal in the colour and add a protective coating. The natural shade will not yellow the grey tone whereas the clear satin may do this. It is also not recommended to apply a varnish on top of a hard wax oil as this may react with the finish and not key to the wood correctly.
