Description
Mirka Basecut Sanding Discs are economical, high-efficiency abrasive discs designed for machine sanding. These 150mm sanding discs have a 15-hole hook-and-loop backing for quick attachment and easy alignment on compatible sanding machines.
Mirka Basecut provides a high initial cutting action combined with a long working life, making it a practical choice for woodworking, furniture restoration, paint removal and general preparation work. The abrasive uses aluminium oxide grain with a semi-open coating to provide efficient sanding performance.
Priory Polishes supplies Mirka Basecut sanding discs in a range of commonly used grits, from P80 through to P320, allowing you to choose the appropriate abrasive for heavier sanding through to finer finishing work.
Uses & Applications
Mirka Basecut sanding discs are suitable for a wide range of sanding applications, including:

Suitable on materials including plaster and putty, glass fibre, synthetic materials, chipboard, plastics, solid surfaces, body filler and lacquers.
Available Grits
Choose the grit according to the amount of material you need to remove and the smoothness of the surface required:
- P80 – heavier sanding and removal of old finishes
- P120 – general preparation and sanding
- P150 – medium sanding and surface preparation
- P180 – finer preparation before finishing
- P240 – fine sanding
- P320 – fine finishing and preparation
The exact grit required will depend on the surface, existing finish and desired result. When working through several grits, use progressively finer abrasives rather than jumping too far between grades.

How to Use Mirka Basecut Sanding Discs
- Choose the appropriate grit for the sanding job.
- Ensure the sanding machine is switched off before fitting the disc.
- Align the 15 holes in the sanding disc with the holes on the backing pad.
- Press the hook-and-loop disc firmly onto the backing pad.
- Check that the disc is securely attached before starting the machine.
- Sand using the appropriate speed and pressure for the material and sanding machine.
- Use dust extraction where appropriate to help keep the work area cleaner and improve visibility of the surface.
- Replace the disc when the abrasive has become worn or sanding performance has reduced.
Choosing the Right Sanding Grit
For paint removal, heavy surface preparation and removing more material, a coarser grit such as P80 can be useful. For general preparation, P120 to P180 are commonly useful grades, while P240 and P320 are better suited to finer sanding and preparation before applying a finish.
For furniture restoration, avoid using a coarser grit than necessary, particularly on veneers and delicate surfaces. Start with a finer abrasive where possible and increase the grit only when more cutting action is required.
Mirka Basecut for Wood & Furniture Restoration
These 150mm sanding discs are particularly useful for preparing wooden furniture before refinishing. They can be used to remove old finishes, smooth repaired areas and prepare bare wood for stains, oils, waxes, varnishes and other finishes.
When sanding antique furniture or veneered surfaces, take care not to remove excessive material. Use a suitable grit and avoid concentrating the sander in one area for too long.
Mirka Basecut for Paint & Finish Removal
Mirka Basecut can be used for sanding and preparing surfaces where old paint, lacquer or other finishes need to be removed or keyed before refinishing. The available grit range allows you to move from more substantial sanding to finer surface preparation.
For previously painted surfaces, always check the existing coating and take appropriate precautions before sanding. If an old coating may contain lead, do not dry sand it without following suitable lead-paint safety procedures.
Please Note
These are 150mm, 15-hole hook-and-loop sanding discs. Before ordering, check that your sanding machine uses a compatible 150mm backing pad and 15-hole extraction pattern.
The Priory Polishes listing is supplied as a box of 100 discs and currently offers P80, P120, P150, P180, P240 and P320 grits.
Always follow the operating instructions supplied with your sanding machine and wear suitable eye, respiratory and hearing protection when sanding.
