How to Use Priory Polishes Polish Reviver
For the best results, always work carefully and test the product before treating the entire surface.
- For a full and comprehensive guide on How to Clean and Revive Wood Furniture, please see our helpful article here.
- Remove loose dust and surface dirt from the furniture.
- Wax fill any small scratches, holes etc.
- Always Test Polish Reviver on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility.
- SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE.
- Apply a suitable amount of Polish Reviver to a clean buffing cloth or ultra fine 0000 steel wire wool.
- Work gently over a small section of the furniture.
- Follow the direction of the wood grain where appropriate.
- Once applied, use slight pressure with a clean cloth to lift out the dirt and remove the excess. Old stubborn marks may require several applications.
- Pay particular attention to areas with accumulated dirt or grime.
- Continue working across the surface a section at a time.
- Remove residue with a clean cloth as appropriate.
- Allow the surface to settle before applying any further finishing product.
- Do not use excessive pressure. The aim is to clean and revive the existing finish rather than aggressively abrade the surface.
- Once the furniture has been cleaned and revived, allow the surface to settle and dry as appropriate before applying any additional finishing product.
- For best results, finish with our Priory Polishes Finishing Bees Wax Polish as this will enhance the finish and protect the surface of the wood.

Polish Reviver for Antique Furniture
Polish Reviver is particularly useful for antique furniture restoration.
Over time, furniture can accumulate layers of dirt, grease, polish residue and general grime. This can leave an otherwise attractive original finish looking dull and lifeless.
Where the original finish remains in reasonable condition, Polish Reviver can help clean the surface and restore a fresher appearance without necessarily removing the original finish.
This makes it particularly useful when carrying out sympathetic restoration work on antique furniture.
Polish Reviver for French Polish
Priory Polishes Polish Reviver can be used to clean and revive suitable French polished surfaces.
French polish can become dull through handling, exposure to everyday dirt and the build-up of old furniture products. A suitable reviving treatment can help improve the appearance of the existing finish.
Work carefully and gradually, particularly on valuable or historic French polished furniture. Always test first in an inconspicuous area.
Polish Reviver for Lacquer and Varnish
Polish Reviver can also be useful for cleaning and rejuvenating suitable lacquered and varnished furniture.
It can help remove surface dirt and grime that has accumulated over time, helping the existing finish appear cleaner and brighter.
It should be used as a reviving and cleaning treatment rather than as a substitute for stripping a severely damaged or failed finish.
What Does Polish Reviver Remove?
Polish Reviver is designed to deal with surface contamination and accumulated grime rather than remove the underlying furniture finish.
Depending on the condition of the surface, it can help remove:
- Surface dirt
- build up of old wax
- Grease and grime
- Old polish residue
- General household deposits
- Surface dullness
It is not intended to strip sound French polish, lacquer or varnish from furniture. This is intended to revive the original finish. If a finish is badly damaged or needs complete removal, a suitable stripping product may be more appropriate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you clean wood without finishing it?
Polish reviver has been designed to clean wood without the need of re-finishing. It has been used by the antique restoration trade for over 20 years with superb success.
Can this be used on water damaged wood?
Yes this works really well on water damaged wood, we have done a step by step guide here on how to repair water damage.
Will this bring wood back to life?
Polish reviver is a superb product to bring your wood back to life, as it not only cleans the timber but it also revives the sheen and adds colour back into the timber.
Do I need to protect the wood after reviving?
Yes we always recommend to use a good quality bees wax after reviving as this will add a protective layer and will also enhance the finish.
Can I use this as a burnishing cream?
Yes, we actually prefer this to burnish wood as we find you get better results. It is a good overall cleaning and reviving product but can act as a burnishing cream on new French polish finishes.
What is the difference between the Polish Reviver and Clock Case Restorer?
The Polish Reviver has slightly more burnishing agents so is a slightly stronger cleaner, whereas the Clock Case Restorer works better on veneered wood.
What is the coverage?
This will really depend on how dirty your wood is or how dry the timber is. A very rough guide would be 150ml will clean a small piece of furniture. A 500 ml bottle will cover around two larger pieces of furniture.

Yes. Polish Reviver is particularly useful for antique furniture where the original finish remains in reasonable condition but has become dull or dirty through age and use.

I have tried using other cleaning products in the past and found nothing compares to the results this Polish Reviver produces. I would highly recommend this product.

Fantastic product. Used it on three Georgian mahogany pieces and it worked a treat – leaves the patina but cleans the grime. They looked wonderful after a wax. Well worth the money A++

Used this, with a toothbrush, to get into the detail of a ‘tribal’ carved box approx 40yrs old. It worked very well and the finishing wax transformed a dull/dusty item into a rich shiny item.
Also used it on a chest of drawers with oooo wire wool with mixed/patchy results. Had to use meths/wire wool to remove the old finish and water stains before trying again and using finishing wax to achieve a reasonable result.

Used this on several antique tables & was amazed how much dirt/wax was removed & how bright the wood looked after re waxing!
Anonymous (verified owner) –
I used this for water stains on a polished antique table. This is a good product and significantly improved the appearance of the table, used in conjunction with good old wax polish. It is not magic, in that the finish is not exactly as it was originally. But it’s a huge improvement and well worth the money — seen from a short distance, you no longer notice any staining. I’m hoping that over time, continued wax polishing will improve the look still further. Would definitely recommend this product.

Not sure about this product just yet. When I used it, I was left with a slightly matte finish when looking at the surface in the light – probably due to my application of it!
Anonymous (verified owner) –
I can’t recommend this highly enough. I have a lot of antique furniture and despite occasionally waxing I have been unable to get it looking good. So I tried this as it promises to remove all inbuilt dirt, before waxing. It certainly does. I am so pleased. This is a wonderful website that I have recently discovered. It gives advice on how best to clean your furniture. I look forward to trying some of the furniture waxes too. Also last year I bought the Slate Blacking for reviving a Slate Clock. It came up a treat.

Have bought the revive several times before. Had to call and ask a question or two about the beeswax finishing polish, the chap was more than happy to help. Both the polish and the revive worked perfectly in harmony, thank you. I have now fully swapped over as they are easier to use, and the results are exemplary. Highly recommend.
Laura S. (verified owner) –
My first time using Priory polish reviver and very pleased with the results on an old unloved oak bookcase. The useful video meant I felt confident in using it. Very happy to recommend.
