What is Chalk Paint Lacquer?

Chalk Paint Lacquer by Annie Sloan is a hard-wearing, water-based protective finish designed to provide a durable coating over Chalk Paint. It is particularly useful for furniture and surfaces that experience regular use, helping protect the painted finish from general wear and tear while retaining the colour and character of your project.

Unlike furniture wax, which creates a softer traditional finish, Chalk Paint Lacquer provides a tougher protective coating. This makes it particularly useful for dining tables, kitchen cabinets, floors, skirting boards and outdoor furniture where durability and resistance to everyday use are important.

This Lacquer contains built-in UV protection, helping reduce colour fading when used on suitable outdoor projects. It dries clear and is designed not to yellow over time.

Available in Matt and Gloss, you can choose the finish that best suits your furniture and interior style.

Why Choose Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Lacquer?

There are several reasons to choose Chalk Paint Lacquer when you need a durable protective finish for painted furniture.

It is particularly useful when your project will experience regular handling, cleaning or general wear and tear. Annie Sloan specifically recommends the lacquer for applications including dining tables, outdoor furniture, floors and skirting boards.

Key benefits include:

  • Durable protective finish
  • Water-based formulation
  • Built-in UV protection
  • Dries clear
  • Designed not to yellow over time
  • Available in Matt and Gloss
  • Suitable for furniture and decorative surfaces
  • Ideal for high-use areas
  • Suitable for outdoor furniture
  • Approximately 19m² coverage per 750ml tin
  • Can be applied with a brush or roller

This makes Annie Sloan Lacquer an excellent choice when you want to combine the decorative appearance of Chalk Paint with a stronger protective finish.

Chalk Paint Lacquer Matt vs Gloss

Choosing between Matt and Gloss depends on the appearance you want to achieve.

Matt Chalk Paint Lacquer

Matt Lacquer creates a subtle, low-sheen finish that complements the characteristic appearance of Chalk Paint.

It is particularly suitable if you want your furniture to retain a soft, understated appearance rather than having a noticeable shine.

The Matt finish can also slightly deepen the colour of the Chalk Paint underneath.

Gloss Chalk Paint Lacquer

Gloss Lacquer provides a light sheen without creating an extremely glossy appearance.

It can be a good choice when you want your furniture to have a slightly brighter or more polished appearance while still retaining the character of the painted finish.

Which Should You Choose?

Finish Appearance Ideal For
Matt Soft, low-sheen finish Traditional and contemporary furniture
Gloss Light, subtle sheen More polished decorative finishes

Both finishes provide the same type of durable protective lacquer; the main difference is the appearance they create.

What Can Chalk Paint Lacquer Be Used On?

Chalk Paint Lacquer is designed for a wide range of interior and exterior applications.

It is particularly useful for:

  • Dining tables
  • Kitchen cabinets
  • Kitchen cupboards
  • Chairs
  • Sideboards
  • Chests of drawers
  • Wardrobes
  • Cabinets
  • Floors
  • Skirting boards
  • Interior furniture
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Decorative painted surfaces

For outdoor projects, the built-in UV protection helps protect against colour fading. For any project, ensure the underlying paint is fully dry and the surface is properly prepared before applying the lacquer.

How to Apply Chalk Paint Lacquer

For the best results, make sure your Chalk Paint is completely dry before applying the lacquer.

Stir the lacquer thoroughly before use. We recommend stirring regularly because some of the product’s components can settle at the bottom of the container.

Apply the lacquer evenly using a suitable flat brush or roller. Work methodically and avoid repeatedly brushing over areas that have already started to dry.

Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly before applying additional coats where required.

Application tips

  • Make sure the painted surface is clean and completely dry.
  • Stir the lacquer thoroughly before use.
  • Apply an even, relatively thin coat.
  • Avoid excessive brushing.
  • Allow each coat to dry before applying another.
  • Use a suitable brush or roller.
  • Test the finish on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • Take extra care when applying over very dark or highly pigmented colours.

How Much Chalk Paint Lacquer Do I Need?

A 750ml tin covers approximately 19 square metres.

Actual coverage can vary depending on the surface, application method and number of coats required.

For example, a 750ml tin can be suitable for a substantial furniture project, while larger projects such as multiple kitchen cabinets or floors may require more than one tin.

Chalk Paint Lacquer vs Chalk Paint Wax

One of the most common questions when finishing Chalk Paint is whether to use wax or lacquer.

Chalk Paint Wax provides a traditional furniture finish with a softer, mellow appearance. It is available in Clear, White, Dark and Black, allowing you to create different decorative effects.

Lacquer provides a harder-wearing protective finish and is particularly suitable for surfaces that experience more regular use.

Choose Chalk Paint Wax when:

  • You want a traditional furniture finish
  • You prefer a soft, mellow appearance
  • You’re creating an aged or distressed effect
  • You want to use coloured waxes for decorative effects

Choose Chalk Paint Lacquer when:

  • The furniture will receive heavy everyday use
  • You need a more durable protective finish
  • You’re painting kitchen cabinets
  • You’re finishing dining tables
  • You’re painting floors or skirting boards
  • You’re working on suitable outdoor furniture

How to Maintain Furniture Finished with Chalk Paint Lacquer

Once your furniture has been finished with the Lacquer, regular gentle cleaning will help maintain its appearance.

Use a soft cloth and avoid unnecessarily abrasive cleaning products that could damage the protective coating.

For heavily used furniture, allow the lacquer to fully cure according to the manufacturer’s guidance before subjecting it to intensive everyday use.
