How to Use Liberon Pure Tung Oil
1. To get an indication of how the wood will look once oiled, test a similar piece of wood or discrete area by applying a wet cloth to the bare wood.
2. Ensure the wood is bare with no previous finish.
3. Shake the tin well before use. Apply Liberon Pure Tung Oil using a soft brush or lint-free cotton buffing cloth. As this is a thick material the oil can be thinned down using up to 50% white spirit for the first few applications.
4. Always apply in the direction of the grain.
5. Allow the Tung Oil to penetrate for around 30 minutes and then wipe off any excess oil using a clean cloth.
6. Always allow the oil to dry for at least 24 hours between coats.
7. For best results and a smoother finish, gently rub with Ultra Fine Steel Wool (Grade 0000) between coats.
8. The final applications of Tung Oil must be applied undiluted with at least two coats. After the final coat, leave for at least seven days before use so it can dry fully.
9. Furniture that has been oiled can be finished with a good quality Wax Polish (non silicone only) to offer further protection and a smooth finish to your wood.
10. To maintain your finish, if waxed, simply re-wax when necessary. If un-waxed, re-apply the Tung Oil around twice per year but you can apply more if required (especially if outside and exposed to bad weather). External Woods must have sufficient amount of coats of oil to give the correct protection.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Apply at least once or twice a year or more if required, depending upon exposure to the weather and usage. On exposed external timbers it is important to apply sufficient coats of oil to give the initial protection.
Important Information
Store Liberon Pure Tung Oil above 5°C. Always replace the lid when not in use. Oily cloths can self-combust so do not leave impregnated cloths in bundles. Before discarding the cloths lay them flat outside to dry to avoid a fire hazard. If the excess is not removed and the surface becomes sticky, wipe with white spirit to remove the sticky film and allow drying fully before continuing. Oil finishes bring out the natural colours of timber. A wet surface will be an indication of the final colour. Always test product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result.
Tung Oil is extracted from nuts and may cause an allergic reaction.
Each 1 Litre covers approximately 8-12 m2.
Clean equipment using White Spirit.
What is Liberon Pure Tung Oil?
Liberon Pure Tung Oil is a premium natural wood oil made from Tung Oil, designed to penetrate into timber rather than simply forming a surface coating. It enhances the natural colour and grain of the wood while providing a durable, long-lasting matt finish.
It is suitable for both interior and exterior wood, making it particularly versatile for furniture restoration, wood finishing and exterior oak projects.
Tung Oil is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol and food acids, making it suitable for demanding interior applications such as kitchen worktops and tables. It is also suitable for toys and surfaces that come into contact with food.
Unlike some blended wood oils, Liberon Pure Tung Oil contains no added dryers, giving it a slower drying time but allowing it to penetrate deeply into the timber.
Why Choose Liberon Pure Tung Oil?
Pure Tung Oil is a popular choice for furniture restoration and wood finishing. It is also very popular for use on Exterior Oak Timber.
Its penetrating formula helps nourish the timber while enhancing the natural appearance of the wood. Rather than hiding the grain, the oil brings out the character and colour of the timber and allows it to develop a natural patina over time.

Is Tung Oil Good for Oak?
Liberon Pure Tung Oil is an excellent choice for oak, particularly exterior oak.
Oak has a naturally attractive grain pattern, and a penetrating oil helps enhance this character while providing protection against moisture and everyday exposure.
It can be used on:
- Solid Oak doors (not Veneered oak, for this we would recommend Osmo door oil)
- Oak furniture
- Oak tables
- Oak worktops
- Oak banisters
- Exterior oak
- Oak garden furniture
- Oak flooring
For exterior applications, sufficient coats are important to provide the required level of protection, and the finish needs regular maintenance depending on exposure to weather and use.
Liberon Pure Tung Oil vs Danish Oil
Both Pure Tung Oil and Liberon Danish Oil are popular wood-finishing products, but they are not identical.
Pure Tung Oil is a natural penetrating oil particularly well suited to exterior oak and high-quality interior timber. It provides a long-lasting matt finish and is highly resistant to water, heat, alcohol and food acids.
Liberon Superior Danish Oil is a blend containing Tung Oil and other natural oils. It is quicker drying and provides a protective finish for interior and exterior wood, although Liberon specifically recommends Pure Tung Oil rather than Danish Oil for exterior oak.
Choose Pure Tung Oil if:
- You’re treating exterior oak
- You want a natural matt finish
- You want a pure Tung Oil finish
- You’re finishing kitchen worktops
- You want a highly water-resistant finish
- You’re happy with a slower drying time
Choose Danish Oil if:
- You want a faster drying oil
- You’re working on general interior wood
- You want to use a blended wood oil
- You need a versatile interior/exterior wood finish
Liberon Pure Tung Oil vs Liberon Finishing Oil
These products are both suitable for wood finishing, but they are designed for different purposes.
Pure Tung Oil is a natural penetrating oil suitable for interior and exterior timber and is particularly recommended for exterior oak.
Liberon Finishing Oil is designed for interior wood and is particularly useful for furniture where you want a durable, water-resistant finish.
The main difference is that Pure Tung Oil is a natural penetrating oil, while Finishing Oil is formulated from Tung Oil and resins to create a different type of finish.
Questions and Answers
Can you use Liberon Pure Tung Oil on Kitchen Worktops
Pure Tung Oil is particularly suitable for wooden kitchen worktops because it provides resistance to water, heat, alcohol and food acids. It penetrates into the timber, enhancing the natural grain while creating a protective matt finish. It can also be used on other food-contact wooden items such as suitable chopping boards and salad bowls.
How Many Coats of Liberon Pure Tung Oil Should I Apply?
For a good finish, we recommend applying a minimum of four coats. Porous timber and exterior wood may require additional coats to provide adequate protection. Allow at least 24 hours between coats, ensuring that the previous coat has dried before applying more oil. The final coat needs additional time to dry fully before the surface is put into regular use
How Long Does Liberon Pure Tung Oil Take to Dry?
Tung Oil is a naturally slow-drying oil because it contains no added dryers. Allow at least 24 hours between coats. After the final coat, leave for at least four days before use. For the best result, don’t rush the final drying process.
Can you use Tung Oil on top of sanding sealer?
It is not recommended to use Liberon Tung Oil over a Sanding Sealer. A sanding sealer is used to seal the pores of the wood to make waxing or French polishing easier. Because a sanding sealer seals the wood, it will not allow the oil to penetrate into the timber correctly. If the oil can not penetrate into wood, it will not create a protective barrier and key to the wood correctly.
Do you have to sand Tung oil before adding Wax?
This will depend on how smooth the finish is once dry. If the wood feels smooth to touch then you can simply wax over the surface. If it is rough to touch, you can very lightly sand or use ultra fine steel wool, before applying wax. Sometimes it is best to lightly sand and add very thin coat of tung oil as a top coat with a lint free cloth. Once dry then wax and you will get a better finish.
Can Liberon Pure Tung Oil Be Used Outdoors?
Yes. Liberon Pure Tung Oil is suitable for exterior wood and is specifically recommended for exterior oak. It penetrates into the timber and helps protect the wood while allowing its natural character and grain to remain visible. Exterior timber requires regular maintenance, so you need to apply Tung Oil at least once or twice a year, or more frequently depending on weather exposure and use.
How many coats of Tung Oil should I apply to get a good finish?
It is recommended to apply at least 4 coats of Tung Oil to get a good finish. Always allow 24 hours to dry between coats and apply thinly. It will then take around 4 – 7 days for the final coat to fully dry and cure.
Can you use Tung Oil on Oak banisters?
Yes, Liberon Tung oil is ideal for Oak timber, including banisters. It can be used on most indoor and outdoor Oak including furniture, wood work, Kitchen tables, Worktops and even musical instruments like a guitar body. It will create a hard-wearing Matt finish.
How Much Liberon Pure Tung Oil Do I Need?
1 litre covers approximately 8–12m², although coverage can vary depending on the porosity of the timber and application method. Porous or untreated wood may absorb more oil, while smoother timber may require less. Because Pure Tung Oil is normally applied in several coats, remember to take the number of applications into account when estimating how much product you’ll need.

Repeat Order of TUNG Oil (recommended for Exterior Oak) which arrived promptly. Company responds quickly to queries. Appearance of Front Door much improved – and darker which I prefer despite Oil labelled as ‘Clear’.
