How to use Osmo Top Oil

1. The wood surface must be clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 18%).
2. Osmo Top Oil is ready to use. Do not thin.
3. Stir well before use.
4. Clean old microporous stains thoroughly.
5. Old paints, varnishes and lacquers must be completely removed.
6. Always wear a dusk mask while sanding.
7. Fill small cracks, larger joints or holes in wood with a Wood Filler.
8. Sand wood surfaces carefully. Begin with coarse sandpaper – final sanding work for furniture and worktops P150- 240 (depending on wood species – for worktops max. P150).
9. Before oiling the surface, remove sanding dust with a broom or vacuum cleaner.
10. Apply the first coat thinly along the wood grain with an Osmo Flat Brush.
11. Allow to dry for approx. 8-10 hours. Ventilate well while drying.
12. Apply the second coat with an Osmo lint-free cloth.
13. For renovations, one coat applied to the clean and dry surface with an Oil finish applicator fleece or lint-free cloth is usually sufficient.
14. Clean tools with Osmo Brush Cleaner (free of aromatic compounds).

Cleaning and Maintenance

Once your surfaces have been treated with Osmo Top Oil, it is recommended to use the surface as little as possible for around 1 week to fully cure. It is not recommended to regular household cleaners as they are not designed to clean oiled wooden surfaces and can damage them over time. For regular daily cleaning, it is recommended to use Osmo Spray Cleaner as this will clean your kitchen work top without removing any oils and waxes, so will not dry the wood out.

Osmo Top Oil Tints

We offer all the colours and shades of Osmo Top Oil tints –

The clear shades are –

  • 3068 Natural – This offers a natural look, so will look like an un-treated piece of wood but with the added protection needed to seal the timber. This is ideal on lighter shades of timber like Oak, Beech and Pine. This is not suitable on darker timbers.
  • 3028 Clear Satin – This enhances the tone of wood with a soft sheen and again will enhance the grain of the work top.
  • 3058 Matt – This highlights the grain in the wood, whilst displaying the natural charm of the timber in a Matt sheen.

The top oil tints in order from light to dark are –

  • 3037 White – This whitewash effect can be added to your worktop as it is very slightly tinted with white. This works really well for modern work surfaces and especially on Oak with an open grain.
  • 3061 Acacia – This is offers a light tint of brown to offer a lovely warmth to your worktop.
  • 3038 Terra – This is a darker brown tint that offers a rich finish.
  • 3039 Graphite – This tint adds a darker grey tone for a more modern finish.

Please note

  • The drying time is Approx. 8-10 hours (normal climatic conditions, 23 °C/50 % rel. humidity). Ventilate well while drying. Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity may increase drying times.
  • The product coverage for 1 coat is 24 m²/1 l. It depends significantly on the character of the wood. All information refers to smooth and planed/cut surfaces. Other surfaces may lead to deviations in coverage.
  • Top Oil 3028 and Top Oil 3058 Clear enhances the tone of wood (permanent wet effect).
  • Top Oil 3068 Natural counteracts exactly this effect and protects wood nearly invisibly. The natural colour tone of wood is preserved.
  • On dark/reddish wood species, Top Oil 3068 Natural is visible as slightly white chalky surface.
  • Applying the product too generously and insufficient ventilation lead to delays in drying time.
  • For cabinet interiors and drawers, apply max. one coat thinly with a cloth.
  • Allow for good ventilation while drying.
  • If a higher gloss level is desired, after thoroughly drying apply Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner (also available as Spray) thinly and polish when dry.
  • Wood surfaces treated with Top Oil are easy to clean. Add Osmo Wash and Care concentrate to mop water and clean the surface with a damp (not wet!) cloth. Use Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner to remove tough stains, which cleans and regenerates the surface at the same time.
  • Store for 5 years and longer if stored in the closed original can. If thickened by frost, store at room temperature for 24 hours prior to use.

Questions and Answers

Can I put Osmo Top Oil over Danish Oil?

Osmo top oil is not recommended to apply over Danish oil as this will prevent the top oil from penetrating the wood. The Top Oil needs to be applied to bare wood so it can absorb into the timber and grain on the wood. If the timber already has danish oil on it, you will need to sand the wood back to the bare timber ready for a new application of Top Oil.

Do you have to coat Osmo Polyx Oil with Osmo Top Oil to prevent staining?

There is no need to apply any Polyx Oil with this product as the Top Oil will add suitable protection to the worktop and help to prevent any staining of the wood. It also helps to add extra protection by maintaining your oiled surfaces by using maintenance products like Osmo Wash And Care or Osmo Spray Cleaner. There is also no need to add a coat of Top Oil on top of Polyx Oil as it will not add any additional benefit as Polyx Oil is a super finish in its own right.

What is better for Oak worktops, Osmo top oil or Osmo Polyx Oil?

With any worktops it is always recommended to use top oil as this has been specially formulated for kitchen worktops. It is food safe once dry and offers superb long lasting results. This wood oil also comes in a variety of colours so you can create your own unique tone.

My worktops were oiled with a different oil last year, do i need to sand them down before i use this oil?

Yes, if a different wood oil has been used in the past, then you would be best to sand this back to bare wood before application. This is to ensure the Top Oil penetrates the wood correctly, without any existing barrier that will stop the oil from soaking in.

Can I use it on a new oak worktop which has already had 2 coats of Osmo Clear Top Oil in matt?

When you have already applied a clear coat of work top oil, you cannot apply a darker finish on top. This is because the clear oil would have already sealed the wood, so it will not allow the coloured oil to soak into the wood. It is very difficult to get an even colour finish unless you are applying this to bare wood. Unfortunately you would have to re-sand the worktop and then apply the darker colour to the bare untreated wood to get an even coat.

What can I use for renovating beech kitchen worktops which have gone orange?  I would like them darker with a satin finish.

When wood is naturally orange, it is very difficult to change the colour tone. If it is just the finish that has gone an orange tone, then you would have to sand this back to the bare wood and re-finish with the wood oil. The only issue you may find is when you apply a darker finish, this may highlight the orange shade if it is naturally this tone. You would have to test a small area first.

Can you use this Osmo Oil on a chopping board?

Yes, Top Oil is suitable for use on a wood chopping board. Because this will get a lot of use, you will need to use Osmo Spray Cleaner on a regular basis to keep this maintained. When the finish starts to get worn due to use, simply apply another coat of top oil when necessary using an Easy Pad. You would usually apply two thin coats with the easy pad and allow to dry between coats.

How do I remove soap marks on my work top that has been treated with Osmo Top Oil?

With soap, it is quite an abrasive product if left on the surface for a long period of time and not wiped away. This can usually be easily fixed with two options. Firstly you can try using Tannin Spot Remover. Simply, spray a small amount on the marks and wipe over to remove the marks (always test a small inconspicuous area first with this). The other option is, with osmo oils, they are very easy to spot repair / patch repair. Very lightly sand the small marked areas and then apply the Osmo top oil (the same original that you used). Apply with a cloth to blend in the marks. You must use a lint-free cloth and then you can always give the entire surface a very light coat to blend in. This is why an oil finish is usually better as you can easily repair it rather than using a varnish or similar. If you use a varnish finish you would have to completely sand this back to repair.
