Methylated Spirit – Frequently Asked Questions

What is methylated spirit used for?
Methylated spirit (often called meths or denatured alcohol) is a versatile solvent used for furniture restoration, cleaning surfaces, and thinning finishing products. It is commonly used for diluting French polish, cleaning tools and brushes, and preparing wood surfaces before finishing.

Because it evaporates quickly and leaves minimal residue, it is widely used by woodworkers, furniture restorers, and DIY enthusiasts.

Can methylated spirit be used for French polishing?
Yes. Methylated spirit is commonly used to thin French polish and shellac finishes to achieve the correct consistency for application. It helps create a smoother finish and allows polishers to build thin layers of shellac gradually.

It is also used to clean French polishing brushes and pads after use.

Is methylated spirit good for cleaning wood surfaces?
Yes. Methylated spirit can be used to clean wooden surfaces after stripping old finishes or before applying new coatings. It removes grease, wax residue, and contaminants that could affect the final finish.

For best results, apply a small amount to a clean cloth and wipe the surface evenly.

Can methylated spirit clean tools and brushes?
Absolutely. Methylated spirit is an effective solvent for cleaning brushes, polishing pads, and other finishing tools. It dissolves residues such as shellac, varnish, and oils, helping extend the life of your equipment.

After cleaning, wipe tools dry before storing.

What else can methylated spirit be used for?
Methylated spirit has many practical uses, including:

  • Cleaning glass, mirrors, and jewellery

  • Dissolving shellac, resins, oils, and ink

  • Thinning varnishes and spirit-based finishes

  • Fuel for spirit burners, stoves, or lighting barbecues

Its fast-evaporating properties make it ideal for both workshop and household cleaning tasks.

Is methylated spirit safe to use?
Methylated spirit is highly flammable and should be handled carefully. Always:

  • Use in a well-ventilated area

  • Wear protective gloves

  • Keep away from heat, sparks, or open flames

  • Store out of reach of children

Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first when using it on surfaces.

How do you use methylated spirit to thin French polish?
When thinning French polish or shellac, add small amounts of methylated spirit gradually, usually up to about 10% of the mixture, until the desired consistency is achieved.

This helps the polish flow better and produces a smoother finish.

Why do furniture restorers use methylated spirit?
Furniture restorers prefer methylated spirit because it:

  • Dissolves shellac and polishing compounds easily

  • Cleans tools and surfaces quickly

  • Evaporates without leaving residue

  • Helps achieve a professional French polished finish

This makes it an essential product in antique furniture restoration and wood finishing.
