Questions and Answers

What is the colour difference between white paint and old white chalk paint?

The colour old white has a very slight tint of grey so adding to a more aged feel. It is often used on antique furniture as it gives the effect of an aged piece of original painted furniture.

How can you age Old White Chalk Paint?

The easiest way to add an aged effect to furniture using old white chalk paint is to use a dark wax on top. This will highlight the texture of the paint and also darken the colour slightly. To do this you get best results using a wax brush as you can push the dark wax into the brush strokes, so is more effective.

What is the best way to distress chalk paint in old white?

To distress you can do this in several different ways and we have done an interesting article here. The easiest way to distress this colour is to sand the final coat of paint back to the bare wood or a use a darker colour under the white and sand through. Always finish using a wax finish. The darker wax will add more of an aged effect and this goes well with a distressed look.

Can you chalk paint kitchen cabinets with this colour?

Yes, as long as you use an appropriate finishing coat. With anything in the kitchen, it is best to use a lacquer as this will create a water-resistant finish.

What is the difference between Annie Sloan Pure, Original or Old white?

The colour Original is a slightly yellowed, warm feel whereas the Old white is offers a greyed, colder feel. Pure is the whitest of the whites. It offers a fresh, modern feel but requires many more coats to mask the wood beneath.

I always have a pot of old white to hand. Nice colour white when used on its own, but also great for mixing and lightening other colours.

Used together with pearlescent glaze to upcycle an old and dated fireplace. The finished look is 10/10. Would definitely use again.
