How to use Rustins Yacht Varnish

  1. The surface must be clean, smooth and free from dust.
  2. Previously varnished surfaces should be cleaned with white spirit or Rustins Surface cleaner and steel wool to ensure the surface is clean and free from wax and grease before applying.
  3. If applying over an existing varnish, it should also be lightly sanded to provide a key.
  4. If the existing finish is flaking or cracking, it should be stripped using Rustins Strypit Paint and Varnish Stripper.
  5. Weather-stained wood can be bleached with a Wood Bleach.
  6. Shake or stir the tin well before use
  7. Using a good quality soft bristled brush, apply the Rustins Yacht varnish evenly.
  8. When applying onto new wood, thin the varnish with 25% white spirit.
  9. The thickness of the varnish film is important and for good durability, so at least three coats should be applied. Ensure each coat is hard and dry before re-applying. We usually recommend leaving for 24 hours between coats.

  • 1 litre will cover approximately 13 sqm in one coat depending on the absorbency of the surface.
  • Clean brushes whilst wet using Rustins Brush Cleaner or white spirit.
  • Hard brushes can be cleaned with Rustins Brush Restorer.

Please note – Do not use below 10 degrees Celsius, in damp conditions or if rain is imminent. Some authorities have special facilities for disposal of waste paints and varnishes. Do not empty into drains, water courses or the sea.

Always test in a small inconspicuous area first to ensure you are happy with the results.

Questions and Answers

Should the varnish be thinned?

For optimal results, the application of Rustins Yacht varnish requires careful attention to detail. To begin, equip yourself with a high-quality soft bristled brush, which will allow for precise and even application. If you are working with brand new wood, it is recommended to thin the varnish with 25% white spirit for better penetration and adhesion. If working on older wood, ther eis no need to thin the varnish.

How should the varnish be applied to the end grains?

A thorough application includes paying attention to every aspect of the wood. Ensure that the varnish is applied evenly along the wood grain, covering all surfaces. Don’t forget to give special care to the end grains, where wood is more susceptible to moisture penetration. This can simply be applied with a brush.

What is the recommended number of coats to apply?

To ensure the longevity and durability of the varnish, it is crucial to apply at least two to three coats. Each coat should be allowed to dry completely before re-application. This can be determined by testing the hardness of the coat. If the surface feels solid and dry, it is ready for the next coat. Patience is key when applying Rustins Yacht varnish. It is advised to leave a minimum of 24 hours between each coat to allow for proper curing and to avoid any risks of damaging the previous coat. This waiting period allows the varnish to settle and create a robust protective layer.
