How to Use Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish

Preparation

1. Ensure the wood surface is clean and free from grease, wax or polish.
2. White spirit or sugar soap should be used as cleaning agents. Sugar soap should be rinsed off well with clean water and allowed to dry.
3. If water has been used on bare wood this can raise the grain of the wood. The surface then needs to be sanded and vacuumed before coating.
4. The wood should first be sanded to provide a key.
5. Interior Heavy Duty Wood Varnish should not be applied over uncured oil base paint as this may cause discoloration. Older painted wood, where the paint itself may fail, should be stripped using a hot air gun or a chemical paint stripper, sanded and cleaned prior to coating. When applied over an emulsion/latex paint, it is possible that Interior Heavy Duty Wood Varnish can draw certain stains through the paint which were not otherwise visible. In this case a stain sealer should be used.

Application

1. Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish can be applied by brush, spray or roller.
2. Apply 2 or 3 coats. On softwood, light sanding in between coats may be necessary, if there is any raising of the grain.
3. Allow 2 hours in between coats and 16 hours after final coat before full use.
4. Do not use in temperatures below 5 degrees C/40 degrees F or in very high humidity. Lower temperatures will slow the final cure time.
5. For a high level of protection and stain resistance apply 2 coats of satin, then 1 coat of dead flat.

How Long Does Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish Take to Dry?

The approximate drying time is 30–60 minutes, with a recommended recoat time of 1–2 hours. Although the surface dries relatively quickly, the varnish requires approximately 16 hours to cure under average conditions before full use. Lower temperatures and high humidity can increase drying and curing times. The product should not be applied below 5°C / 40°F or in very high humidity.

How Much Does Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish Cover?

Polyvine Heavy Duty Wood Varnish provides coverage of approximately 10–20 square metres per litre, depending on the surface and its absorbency. Coverage can vary considerably depending on the type and condition of the timber, so we recommend allowing for additional product when coating particularly porous wood.
