How to Use Liberon Teak Oil

1. Ensure the wood is bare, clean, dry and dust free.
2. Remove existing wax finishes with Liberon Wax and Polish Remover and remove suitable varnish finishes using Liberon Fine Wood Stripper where required. Any dirt, grease, old finish or contamination left on the surface can prevent the oil from penetrating evenly.
3. Apply Liberon Teak Oil using a soft-bristle brush or lint-free cotton cloth.
4. Leave the Teak Oil to penetrate for around 15 – 20 minutes, and then wipe off any excess with a clean lint-free cloth. Failure to wipe off the excess will prevent the further penetration of future coats and can leave a sticky surface.
5. Allow at least 24 hours between coats.
6. Apply additional coats as required. The number of coats required will depend on how dry or damaged the wood is.
7. We recommend a minimum of three coats for most interior and exterior timbers.
8. For best results, gently rub between coats using Ultra Fine Steel Wool Grade 0000 or extra fine abrasive paper.
9. Allow the final coat to fully harden before use.
10. After the finish coat is fully hardened, surfaces may be cleaned using a damp cloth and spills should be wiped up immediately. For stubborn stains, a mild detergent can be used.
11. Surfaces need to be re-oiled once per year or more, depending upon usage. Oiled external timbers will need regular application, usually the minimum of twice per year.
12. For interior furniture that has been oiled, you can finish with a good quality Wax Polish (non silicone only) to offer further protection and a smooth finish to your wood. Once waxed only maintain using wax in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you apply Teak Oil Over Water-Based Stains

Liberon Teak Oil can be applied over suitable water-based wood stains, provided the stain is completely dry before applying the oil. Apply the first coat thinly and quickly to reduce the risk of disturbing or pulling out the underlying stain. Always test the complete finishing system on a spare piece of timber first, as the oil may alter the appearance of the stained wood. If you want a coloured wood finish then you would be better to use a tinted hard wax oil or tinted exterior wood oil.

Can You Varnish Over Teak Oil?

Varnishing over Liberon Teak Oil is not recommended. Because the oil penetrates into the timber, applying varnish over the oiled surface may prevent the varnish from drying and adhering correctly. This can result in the varnish reacting, peeling or flaking over time. Teak Oil is designed to be used as a final protective finish, so an additional varnish coating should generally not be necessary.

Is Liberon Teak Oil good for garden furniture?

Yes. Liberon Teak Oil is particularly suitable for most garden furniture and exterior hardwoods. It contains UV filters to help minimise fading caused by sunlight. For Oak it is recommended to use Liberon Tung oil.

Please note

To get an indication of how the wood will look once oiled, test a similar piece of wood or discrete area by applying a wet cloth to the bare wood. Always test the product on a spare surface or inconspicuous area for colour, compatibility and end result. Follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Store Liberon Teak Oil in temperatures above 5°C and always replace the lid when not in use. Oily cloths can self-combust so do not leave impregnated cloths in bundles. Before discarding the cloths lay them flat outside to dry to avoid a fire hazard. Teak Oil is not suitable for use on external oak, Pure Tung Oil is recommended for this purpose. If the excess is not removed and the surface becomes sticky, wipe with white spirit to remove the sticky film. Allow to dry fully before continuing.
