How to use Osmo Wood Filler
- Ensure that the surface is clean, dry and free from dust or dirt.
- If you are going to stain the filler then use Osmo Natural / Clear Wood filler. Otherwise match the colour to the wood as close as possible.
- Using a plastic or high-quality stainless steel putty knife, apply the Osmo wood filler to the wood directly out of the tub. If the filler turns black after application then the putty knife is not high content stainless steel but please don’t worry as the black will sand off.
- Apply the Wood Filler with the filler knife or spatula to form a smooth finish over the damaged area.
- If the hole is greater than 6mm, fill by layering the Osmo Wood filler in 6mm increments. For large, deep holes and cracks, it is best to fill in stages by layering the Wood Filler. Always allow each layer to fully dry before applying the next layer. 2 to 3 applications may be needed depending on the size of the damage to get a smooth level with the surrounding wood.
- Let the wood filler dry thoroughly. Leave for at least 30 minutes and when the filler is fully dry, sand the filled area and the surrounding wood. You can use a heat gun or hair dryer to speed up the drying time if necessary. You will know if the filler is properly dry if it sands to the consistency of talcum powder. If it is not dry correctly then you can remove the filler when sanding.
- Sand the filler to a flat finish and remove all dust and debris using a hoover. Ensure all excess filler is sanded from the area immediately surrounding the repair as this may affect the final finish.
- If applicable apply the wood stain to the wood, gently. Do not rub the stain in with an aggressive action or you may remove the wood filler.
- Once dry, the filler can be coated with a suitable wood oil, wax or stain. Osmo wood finishes are ideal.
Please note
The Natural / Clear colour is not a translucent filler; it is a neutral cream colour that can be more easily stained if required.
For trowel filling over the entire wood floor – Mix the osmo wood filler in a tub with warm water (around 15% of water to be used) until it has the consistency of toothpaste. You can use a mixer attached to a heavy duty drill to mix. Apply the wood filler (not too heavily) just before the final sand using a plastic trowel across the grain over the entire floor. Make sure the filler is forced into deep voids, chips and cracks. Once fully dry, sand the entire floor ready for application of the wood oil.
Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the container at all times.
The coverage is up to 12m² per litre.

Questions and Answers
What makes Osmo Wood Filler so special?
Osmo wood filler is a superb product and here is a list of some of the benefits of using this wood filler –
- It is fast drying as it dries in only, approximately 30 minutes
- It is available in a wide range of colours so you can get as close colour to your timber that you are filling.
- It is non-flammable
- This is a multi-purpose product as it can be used as an edge filler, wood putty, crack filler and a sanding sealer all in one.
- It is non-toxic
- It is made with no acrylic, latex or solvent as it is water based.
- You can easily clean your tools in water after use.
- This wood filler is stainable, either before or after application
- It is heat proof and freeze proof
- It won’t shrink, sink, crack or fall out once fully dry
- It also has an Indefinite life storage, therefore there is no waste as it is usable to last drop
Can Osmo Wood filler be mixed with a wood stain?
Yes, this wood filler can be mixed with a tint or stain to achieve a custom colour but it is always best to choose the colour as close to the wood colour you are filling first to get a similar colour match (there are 9 different tinted colours to choose from).
Why is the filler drying lighter as it dries?
Osmo Wood filler will dry lighter but it will return to its original colour once the final finish is applied.
Can I use this as a grain filler for my oak desk?
This Osmo filler is more for use on chips, cracks etc. and not necessarily for filling the grain of the wood. If you do decide to use this as a grain filler, then when sanding do not use a grit coarser than 120. For Grain Filler I would personally recommend using Rustins Grain filler, as this is specially designed for this purpose.
Do you know if I can dilute this with water and make a paste to use as a grain filler for an oak top?
On the label this does say that you can dilute this slightly with water but I would always recommend to test a small inconspicuous area first.
