Description

Priory Polishes No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Concentrate Solution is a powerful specialist cleaning fluid for clock movements, brass, copper and bronze components. It has been used by clock restorers and the horological restoration trade for many years to help remove built-up grease, oil, dirt and tarnish from metal clock parts.

It is particularly useful when restoring antique clocks, mantel clocks, carriage clocks, longcase clocks and other mechanical clock movements and can also be used for suitable brass and copper restoration work outside horology.

The concentrated formula is diluted with water before use, allowing the cleaning strength to be adjusted for different applications. It can also be used in an ultrasonic cleaning tank when diluted as recommended.

Cleaning Clock Movements

For the best results when cleaning an antique clock movement, the movement should ideally be dismantled into its component parts by someone with the appropriate knowledge and experience. Cleaning individual components makes it easier to remove contamination and inspect the mechanism afterwards.

If you are inexperienced with clock restoration, take particular care before dismantling a valuable or historically important movement. The cleaning solution is intended for cleaning and should not replace proper servicing, inspection or repair of a clock mechanism.

Dilution & Cleaning Strength

Standard Cleaning

For standard cleaning, mix:

1 part No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Concentrate to 7 parts cold water.

Use a suitable chemical-resistant container, such as a suitable polythene container. Ensure the parts being cleaned can be fully submerged.

Ultrasonic Cleaning or Light Soiling

For light soiling or ultrasonic cleaning applications, dilute:

1 part No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Concentrate to 8 parts water.

Always follow the instructions for your ultrasonic cleaner and use appropriate ventilation and protective equipment.

Using No 1 Clock Cleaner in an Ultrasonic Tank

Priory Polishes No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Concentrate can be used for suitable ultrasonic cleaning applications. For light soiling or ultrasonic use, dilute 1 part concentrate to 8 parts water.

Ultrasonic cleaning can be particularly useful for smaller removable clock components, helping the cleaning solution reach areas that can be difficult to clean by hand. Parts should still be assessed for suitability before placing them into an ultrasonic cleaner.

After cleaning, rinse the components thoroughly with clean water and dry them completely before proceeding with further restoration or lubrication.

How to Use No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Solution

  1. Prepare the cleaning solution. For standard cleaning, mix 1 part concentrate with 7 parts cold water in a suitable container.
  2. Prepare the components. Remove loose dirt and contamination where appropriate and ensure the parts are suitable for the cleaning process.
  3. Submerge the parts. Place the clock mechanism or suitable brass, copper or bronze components fully into the diluted solution.
  4. Allow the solution to work. For best results, begin by soaking for approximately 30 minutes to 1 Hour.
  5. Agitate the surface. Lightly work stubborn areas with a suitable brush or 0000 wire wool where appropriate.
  6. Re-submerge. Return the components to the solution and repeat the process approximately every 30 minutes as required.
  7. Repeat if necessary. Heavily soiled or badly tarnished components may require several applications.
  8. Rinse thoroughly. Once the required level of cleaning has been achieved, remove the components and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  9. Dry completely. Ensure all components are thoroughly dried before continuing with restoration.
  10. Re-lubricate and restore. Once completely clean and dry, proceed with the appropriate clock restoration process.

After Cleaning

After cleaning, components should be thoroughly rinsed and completely dried. Once the movement has been cleaned and is ready for reassembly and lubrication, we recommend using Priory Polishes Clock Oil where appropriate.

Cleaning Brass, Copper & Bronze

No 1 Ammoniated Clock Cleaning Concentrate can be used for suitable brass, copper and bronze restoration projects as well as clock movements. It is useful where grease, oil, accumulated dirt and tarnish need to be removed before further polishing or restoration.

For valuable, delicate, plated, lacquered or unusual items, always test a small inconspicuous area first and make sure the material is suitable for the cleaning process.

Can the Diluted Solution Be Reused?

The diluted cleaning solution can become contaminated as it is used. As dirt, grease and tarnish accumulate in the solution, its effectiveness will decrease. For professional restoration work, the condition of the solution should be assessed during use and it should be replaced when it becomes heavily contaminated or no longer cleans effectively.

If storing diluted solution between uses, keep it in a properly sealed, airtight container and label it clearly. Do not leave the solution exposed unnecessarily.

Should I dismantle a clock before cleaning it?

For the best restoration results, professional restorers generally dismantle movements into suitable component parts before cleaning. If you are not experienced with clock mechanisms, seek professional advice before dismantling a valuable or antique clock.

Does No 1 Ammoniated Cleaner contain xylene?

Is there a milder alternative to No 1?

How should I store the concentrate?

    Excellent product, use outdoors or in a garage with all doors open etc.. It can be reused multiple times, especially if you scrub the clock parts in warm soapy water with old toothbrush first and use a wooden stick to remove hard oily deposits (often in pinions and bushings) before using the cleaning solution. It’ll be a dirty black liquid after 5 uses, loses effectiveness after maybe 10 uses.

    Diluted it at 5:1 as felt that the recommended strength was perhaps a bit weak given the oily dirt on my clock and the fact that I don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner. I did see from some reviews that it can be used undiluted. In summary it’s great and definitely cleaned my clock very effectively at 5:1. Used “0000” wire wool to take off any staining. Can definitely recommend and found the smallest version was adequate for my purpose.
