What Is Jade Oil Used For?
Jade Oil is designed for protecting interior metal surfaces. It is especially useful after metal has been cleaned, polished, coloured, antiqued or patinated.
Typical applications include:
- Antique metal restoration
- Decorative metal objects
- Brass and copper restoration
- Bronze and other suitable metalwork
- Patinated metal
- Antiqued metal finishes
- Metal following cleaning and polishing
- Metal treated with antiquing or patination fluid
- Cabinet hardware and decorative fittings
- Metal restoration projects where a thin protective coating is required
Jade Oil for Metal Restoration
After metal has been cleaned or restored, the newly exposed surface can be more susceptible to moisture and tarnishing. Jade Oil provides a thin protective film which helps protect the finished surface.
This makes it an excellent final stage for many metal restoration projects. Once the metal has been cleaned, polished or treated, Jade Oil can be applied to help preserve the appearance of the finished piece.
Always make sure the metal is completely clean and dry before application. Any remaining moisture, grease or contamination can affect the result.
Jade Oil After Metal Antiquing & Patination
Jade Oil is particularly useful after metal antiquing and patination. Once the desired colour or aged appearance has been achieved, the treated metal should be rinsed where required and dried thoroughly before applying the protective oil.
Jade Oil can be used after Priory Polishes metal antiquing products to help protect the newly created patina and provide an attractive finished appearance.
For example, after using our Brown Metal Antiquing Patination Fluid or Black Metal Antiquing Patination Fluid, the finished metal can be sealed with Jade Oil once completely dry.
Jade Oil can also be used following our Curator Antiquing Fluid range and other suitable metal colouring treatments.
Preparing the Metal
Proper preparation is essential for the best results.
- Clean the metal thoroughly and remove dirt, grease and fingerprints.
- Remove any unsuitable previous coating or lacquer where necessary.
- Rinse the surface where the preceding treatment requires rinsing.
- Dry the metal completely.
- Check the surface carefully before applying Jade Oil.
When working with newly patinated metal, it is particularly important that the surface is completely dry before applying the protective oil.
How to Apply Priory Polishes Jade Oil
1. Prepare the Surface
Make sure the metal is clean, dry and free from grease, fingerprints and other contamination.
2. Shake Well
Shake the Jade Oil thoroughly before use.
3. Do Not Dilute
Jade Oil is ready to use and should be applied as supplied.
4. Apply a Thin, Even Coat
Apply the oil using a clean, soft lint-free cloth or suitable brush. Work evenly over the surface to create a thin protective coating.
Larger areas can be sprayed where appropriate.
5. Allow to Dry
Allow the treated metal to dry thoroughly. A minimum drying time of 24 hours should be allowed before handling.
6. Additional Coat
One coat is normally sufficient, although an additional coat can be applied if required.
Coverage & Drying Time
Jade Oil covers approximately 16–20 square metres per litre per coat, depending on the surface and application method.
Allow a minimum of 24 hours drying time before handling the treated metal.
Drying times can vary according to temperature, humidity, ventilation and the thickness of the applied coating.
Maintaining Protected Metal
Jade Oil leaves a thin protective film on the metal to help reduce future tarnishing. Over time, particularly on frequently handled objects, the protective treatment may require renewal.
Before reapplying, clean the surface and make sure it is completely dry. Always test first where the metal has an existing coating or finish.
For valuable antiques and specialist restoration work, we recommend testing all cleaning and finishing products on an inconspicuous area before treating the complete object.
