Description
Zinsser Paint is a range of specialist primers and stain-blocking products designed to prepare surfaces before applying a final paint finish. Zinsser primers are particularly useful when ordinary paint may struggle to adhere, when stains could bleed through the topcoat, or when difficult surfaces need sealing before painting.
At Priory Polishes, we offer three popular Zinsser products: Zinsser BIN Primer, Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer and Zinsser Cover Stain.
Each product has different properties, making it important to select the right Zinsser primer for your particular surface and project.

Zinsser BIN Primer
Zinsser BIN is the original pigmented shellac-based primer-sealer and stain killer. It is particularly useful for difficult stains, knots, sap, smoke and odours and is widely used for furniture, woodwork, doors, cabinets and other interior surfaces.
BIN is also suitable for exterior spot priming, including knots, sap streaks and certain rust stains, but it is not intended for whole-surface exterior application.
Key Benefits of Zinsser BIN
- Shellac-based stain-blocking primer and sealer
- Excellent for stubborn and persistent stains
- Seals knots and wood sap streaks
- Helps seal smoke, fire, pet and musty odours
- Excellent adhesion to many glossy surfaces
- Can be used on interior wood, furniture, doors, cabinets and metal
- Dries rapidly and can generally be recoated after 45 minutes
- Suitable under most conventional topcoats
Zinsser BIN can block stains including water, nicotine, ink, graffiti, crayon, marker, rust and smoke. Particularly stubborn stains may require a second coat.
Using Zinsser BIN on Wood and Furniture
Zinsser BIN is especially useful when painting wooden furniture, cabinets, doors and other interior woodwork where knots, resin, stains or previous finishes could cause problems with the new paint.
It can also help seal porous wood and improve the appearance of the final painted finish.
Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer
Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 is a universal, water-based primer-sealer suitable for both interior and exterior applications. It provides excellent adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces and is particularly useful where a low-odour, easy-to-use primer is preferred.

Bulls Eye 123 for Difficult Surfaces
Bulls Eye 123 adheres to surfaces including wood, plaster, concrete, hardboard, glass, tile, PVC, fibreglass and suitable glossy painted surfaces. It can also provide a rust-inhibitive coating on appropriately prepared iron and steel.
It is not intended for blocking heavy water stains or for use on floors, decks, roofs or surfaces subject to prolonged immersion or contact with water.
Zinsser Cover Stain
Zinsser Cover Stain is an all-purpose, oil-based stain-blocking primer-sealer for interior and exterior applications. It is particularly useful for sealing difficult stains and preparing wood and other surfaces before applying a decorative topcoat.
Key Benefits of Cover Stain
- Oil-based interior and exterior primer-sealer
- Excellent for stain blocking

- Helps prevent cedar and redwood tannin bleed
- Suitable for exterior wood

Cover Stain is particularly useful for fire-, smoke- and water-damaged surfaces, including walls, ceilings, doors, cabinets, furniture, exterior woodwork, fascia, soffits and other suitable surfaces.
Which Zinsser Primer Should I Choose?
| Zinsser Product | Best For | Type |
|---|---|---|
| BIN Primer | Severe stains, knots, sap, smoke and odours; interior furniture and woodwork | Shellac-based |
| Bulls Eye 123 | General-purpose interior and exterior priming and difficult surfaces | Water-based |
| Cover Stain | Stain blocking, exterior wood and smoke, water and nicotine stains | Oil-based |
If you are dealing with knots, severe stains or difficult odours on interior woodwork, Zinsser BIN is often the specialist choice. For a versatile, water-based primer for interior and exterior surfaces, Bulls Eye 123 is an excellent option. For exterior wood and general stain blocking, Zinsser Cover Stain is particularly useful.
Surface Preparation
Good surface preparation is important when using any primer. Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free from dust, dirt, grease, oil, wax, mould and other contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.
Remove loose or peeling coatings and repair holes, cracks and damaged areas before priming. Lightly sand where appropriate to remove loose fibres, weathered material or uneven edges.
When preparing old painted surfaces, take particular care. Paint applied before the 1960s may contain lead. Avoid creating lead dust when sanding or removing old coatings and follow appropriate precautions.
How to Use Zinsser Primers
Zinsser BIN
Shake or stir before use. Apply with a suitable brush, roller or pad. In most cases one coat is sufficient, although very porous surfaces or particularly stubborn stains may require additional coats.
BIN is normally touch dry in around 20 minutes and can generally be recoated after approximately 45 minutes under suitable conditions. Allow the primer to cure fully before subjecting the surface to demanding use.
Bulls Eye 123
Stir thoroughly before use and apply to a clean, dry surface using a suitable synthetic brush, roller or pad. It is normally ready to use without dilution.
One coat is generally sufficient, although porous surfaces may require two coats. Bulls Eye 123 is normally touch dry in around 30 minutes and can generally be recoated after approximately 1 hour.
Cover Stain
Shake or stir thoroughly before use. Apply with a suitable natural or synthetic bristle brush, roller, pad or appropriate sprayer.
One coat is generally sufficient for priming most surfaces, although very porous surfaces may require a second coat. Allow the primer to come to room temperature before use and work in a well-ventilated area.
Coverage and Drying Times
- Zinsser BIN: approximately 12.5m² per litre on smooth, painted, non-porous surfaces. Touch dry in around 20 minutes; recoat after approximately 45 minutes.
- Bulls Eye 123: approximately 10m² per litre. Touch dry in around 30 minutes; recoat after approximately 1 hour.
- Zinsser Cover Stain: approximately 9.8m² per litre. Recoat in around 2 hours under suitable conditions.
Coverage and drying times vary according to surface porosity, texture, temperature, humidity and application method.
Please Note
Always select the Zinsser primer appropriate for your surface and intended application. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area if you are unsure how the existing surface or coating will react.
Do not use Zinsser BIN as a whole-surface exterior coating, or on floors, decks or surfaces subject to prolonged contact with water. Bulls Eye 123 is also not intended for floors, decks, roofs or areas subject to prolonged immersion or water contact.
Allow the primer to dry sufficiently before applying the chosen topcoat and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular product.
