How to use Zinsser BIN primer
Recommended for application to interior ceilings, walls, doors, trim, cabinets, furniture, and related paint-able surfaces. Exterior uses are limited to spot priming only. May be used to block water, grease, rust, smoke, asphalt, graffiti, and many other types of stains.
• Interior– Use as a full surface primer on drywall, cured plaster, filled areas, ceiling tiles, wood or metal doors, windows, cabinets, plywood, paneling, trim, glossy paints, clear finishes and other paint-able interior surfaces.
• Exterior– B-I-N is great for exterior spot priming over knots, sap streaks, rust stains, copper screening stains, properly prepared weathered siding, and trim touch-up. B-I-N is also ideal for interior spot applications like water stains and filled spots. Note that spot-primed areas on porous surfaces may “flash” or show through paints with poor hiding power including many ceiling paints and glossy enamels – use only high-hiding finish paints.
• Sealing– B-I-N seals unpainted or porous surfaces so topcoat paints have better coverage. It fills and binds wood fibres to create a smooth, sealed surface with “enamel holdout” so fewer coats of paint are needed.
Note that very porous surfaces may require two coats and may reduce square foot coverage of the product.
• Stain Killing– Zinsser paint B-I-N is the ultimate interior stain killing primer. One coat will effectively block stains, including water, nicotine, ink, graffiti, crayon, marker, rust and smoke stains so they won’t bleed into the
topcoat. Some stains require a second coat. Recommended for permanently sealing heavy fire and water stains B-I-N seals in smoke stains and odours caused by fires. It also seals in urine and other animal
odours from smelling. B-I-N may be used in areas where incidental contact to food items occurs. B-I-N is also recommended for sealing nicotine stains or odours from tobacco.
• Glossy Surfaces – Glossy enamel paint and clear finishes, ceramic tile, paneling, cabinets and metal surfaces can be primed without sanding or de-glossing.
• Over Wall covering– B-I-N® may be used to prime existing, soundly adhered, non-porous wall coverings to hide patterns/dark colours prior to painting.
Directions –
Surface Preparation – Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mildew, wallpaper adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure, always wash surface with a household ammonia and water solution, appropriate cleaning solution, or solvent (Do not use tri sodium phosphate based cleaners). Remove any unsoundly adhered coatings. Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth with the surface. Lightly sand exposed exterior wood with 80 to 100 grit sandpaper to remove loose or weathered wood fibres. Attempt to remove existing stains by washing, sanding, scraping, etc. Bare wood that has been exposed for more than 4 weeks should be lightly sanded or abraded to remove weathered wood fibres. Countersink exposed nail heads and fill all nail holes and gouges. Remove interior mould and mildew before painting with a solution of one-cup household bleach per 5 litres of water or a quality biocidal wash. Rinse well. Always wear protective clothing and goggles to prevent eye and skin contact with bleach. Do not mix ammonia or any other chemical with bleach solution. If you are concerned about mould and mildew behind walls, underneath flooring, in ventilation systems or other unseen areas, contact a professional who specialises in mould and mildew remediation. For commercial buildings and schools follow appropriate guidelines for mould removal. Remove rust and wipe metal with a cloth dampened in alcohol then apply a rust-inhibitive primer.
Application – Apply Zinsser paint when air and surface temperature is between -1°and 32°C and relative humidity is less than 70%. Do not apply B-I-N if surface temperature is within 15% of the dew point. Substrate moisture content should not exceed 12%. Shake or stir before using. Eliminate all sources of ignition. In most cases only one coat is necessary to prime most surfaces. If excessive absorption occurs over very porous substrates a second coat may be necessary. Spot priming is recommended only under high-hiding topcoat paints. For best results prime entire surface before painting. Keep container closed when not in use. Do not thin this product. Apply using a Brush, Roller or Pad – Use natural or synthetic (nylon, polyester or blend)
Tinting – B-I-N can be tinted with up to 16 ml of universal tinter per litre. Tinting the primer toward the colour of the topcoat helps it hide in one coat. To achieve improved topcoat hide of mid/deep-tone colours, use Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Deep Tint Primer Sealer.
Dry Time -In most cases B-I-N will dry to the touch in 20 minutes and can be re-coated in 45 minutes. The dry primer film develops full adhesion after it cures in 1 to 3 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time.
Coverage – Approx. 12.5 m2 / litre smooth, painted, non- porous surfaces. Application losses may vary according to the porosity and texture of the substrate and the method of application and should be taken into account when estimating the quantity of product needed.
Cleanup– Clean up spills and drips with denatured alcohol or ammoniated detergent. If spills or drips have dried use denatured alcohol or ammoniated detergent to soften and remove primer. Wash application tools in a solution of 1 part ammonia and 3 parts water immediately after use. If product has dried on application tool soak the tool overnight in a solution of equal parts ammonia and water. Scrub clean with a stiff brush. Follow manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning spray equipment.
How to use Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer
Recommended for application to interior and exterior – walls, ceilings, doors, trim, fascia, soffits, foundations, railings, and related paint-able surfaces. Bulls Eye 1-2-3 bonds to wood, plaster, concrete, gloss enamels, hardboard, glass and tile. Provides a rust inhibitive coating on iron railings, steel frames, piping, etc. Resists the growth of mould and mildew on primer film in damp, humid environments. Resistant to high pH surfaces (up to 12.5) including; plaster, poured concrete, concrete block, stucco and ‘hot’ joint / texture compounds. Seals porous surfaces and traps most stains in the primer film – graffiti, grease, rust, cedar and redwood tannin, creosote, and asphalt stains. Some stains may require a second coat. Interior Substrates– New or previously painted drywall, cured plaster, cement, poured concrete, concrete block, stucco, wood (pine, fir, birch, oak and plywood), aluminium, iron, steel and galvanised metal, PVC, glossy laminates and other interior surfaces.
Exterior Substrates– Recommended for all types of wood (New or previously painted pine, fir, cedar, redwood, plywood, T-111, and pressure treated wood), hardboard, metal (aluminium, steel, iron and galvanised metal), PVC, fibre glass, masonry (stucco, concrete block, poured concrete and brick). Rust Inhibitive– Dries to a tight, water resistant film that inhibits development and spread of rust on metal. Remove rust
and wipe surface clean with a rag dampened in alcohol. Mould and Mildew Resistance– Resists the growth of mould and mildew on the primer film. High pH Resistance – Can be applied to high pH surfaces
(up to 12.5) without bubbling, lifting or degrading due to high alkalinity making it an ideal primer for concrete, stucco, plaster and fast setting joint / texture compounds. Cedar and Redwood Bleed–Traps tannins in the primer film to prevent them from ‘bleeding’ into the finish coat. For best results, allow to dry overnight before applying topcoat. Very porous woods may require two coats before topcoat. Chalky Siding– Contains chalk-binding resins for use on moderately chalked aluminium or previously painted siding and trim.
Glossy Surfaces– Adheres to glossy enamel paints and clear finishes, Formica®, Masonite®, PVC, fibreglass, vinyl – even ceramic tile – without pre-sanding or surface de-glossing.
Directions –
Application – Ready to use – no dilution necessary. In most cases only one coat is necessary. Porous surfaces may require two coats to properly seal. Prime entire surface for best results.
Thinning- If thinning is necessary add no more than 10 % clean water and stir thoroughly. Note that thinning the primer may affect its stain blocking properties.
Surfaces should be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, oil, wax, mould, wallpaper adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. If unsure, always wash surface with a household cleaner, appropriate cleaning solution, or solvent. Clean new galvanised with methylated spirit. Remove any unsoundly adhered coatings. Sand any remaining paint film edges smooth with the surface. New plaster which is polished or dusty should be sealed with Zinsser Gardz. Lightly sand exposed exterior wood with 80 to 100 grit sandpaper to remove loose or weathered wood fibers. When priming over stained areas, first attempt to remove as much of the stain as possible by washing, sanding, scraping, etc. Remove mould and treat the area with Blackfriar Fungicidal Wash, or Mould Killer & Remover. Wire brush rusty areas. Spot prime knots and sap streaks with Zinsser paint B-I-N Primer-Sealer.
Dry Time – At normal temperatures Bulls Eye 1-2-3 will dry to touch in 30 minutes and can be re-coated after one hour. Topcoat within 30 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity, and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time of the product. Full adhesion and hardness develop in 7 days.
Coverage – 10m2 per litre. Coverage may vary with surface porosity.
Cleanup – Clean application tools with warm water and liquid detergent or household cleaner. Work solution into bristles/nap and rinse well.

Questions and Answers
Can Zinsser be used on gloss laminate and if so, does it have to be sanded first?
It is usually best to sand first so the paint can key onto the surface properly. With gloss laminate you would need to use Zinsser BIN Shellac-Based Primer as this water based primer will not be suitable for this.
