Always test the varnish on an inconspicuous area first, particularly when working over dark colours, wallpaper or unusual decorative finishes.

Polyvine Decorators Varnish for Painted Furniture

Polyvine Decorators Varnish is ideal for protecting painted furniture where you want to retain the appearance of the underlying paint while adding a durable protective coating.

It can be used over suitable painted furniture to help protect against:

  • Finger marks
  • Stains
  • Scuffing
  • General wear
  • Colour fading

It is particularly useful for upcycling furniture, painted cabinets, decorative furniture and other painted surfaces.

For the best results, ensure the paint is fully cured and the surface is clean, dry and free from dust, grease, wax and other contamination before applying the varnish.

Polyvine Decorators Varnish for Wallpaper

Polyvine Decorators Varnish can be used to protect suitable wallpaper, helping create a more durable and wipeable decorative surface.

This makes it particularly useful for wallpaper in areas where additional protection is desirable.

However, we always recommend testing all wallpaper for compatibility, and the manufacturer’s current information states that the product is not suitable for vinyl wall covering.

Always carry out a test application before treating the entire surface.

Dead Flat vs Satin

Polyvine Decorators Varnish is available in Dead Flat and Satin finishes.

Dead Flat

Dead Flat provides a very low-sheen finish where you want the protective properties of the varnish without a noticeable glossy appearance.

It is particularly useful where maintaining the original flat appearance of a painted or decorative surface is important.

Apply Dead Flat sparingly and brush out well, as over-application can result in misting. Always do a test application over over dark colours and wallpapers.

Satin

Satin provides a soft sheen while maintaining a clear protective finish.

For a Dead Flat finish with a high degree of protection, you can apply two coats of Satin followed by one coat of Dead Flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does Polyvine Decorators Varnish Take to Dry?

Drying time is approximately 30–60 minutes, with a re-coat time of 1–2 hours. Full curing can take approximately 5–7 days.

Can Polyvine Decorators Varnish Be Used Outside?

Yes, this can be used for suitable exterior applications, including exterior painted surfaces. However, it should not be applied to the exterior bare timber. For exterior projects, make sure the underlying surface and paint system are suitable and always test before full application.

How to Clean Brushes After Using Decorators Varnish

This is a water-based product, so brushes and equipment can be cleaned using soap and water before the clear coating dries. Wipe away excess product from surfaces with a damp cloth. Once the product has dried, deposits can be more difficult to remove and may require a suitable paint stripper.

How Many Coats of Decorators Varnish Do You Need?

The number of coats depends on the finish and level of protection required.

Satin: Apply 2–3 coats.

Dead Flat: Apply 1–2 coats.

For a Dead Flat finish requiring a high level of protection, apply two coats of Satin followed by one thin coat of Dead Flat. For porous surfaces, dilute the first coat by 10% with water.

Is Polyvine Decorators Varnish waterproof?

This varnish is water resistant but not completely waterproof. For a waterproof finish you can find several other options from the polyvine range.

Can Polyvine Decorators Varnish be used over emulsion?

Yes. It can be used over suitable emulsion paint, although we always recommend testing first because existing contaminants or stains can potentially be drawn through the paint film.

Please Note

Always apply to a test area before starting work. Appearance may vary according to the colour and type of wood and the number of coats.

Do not apply over uncured oil paints.

Apply dead flat finish sparingly and brush out well, over application could result in misting.

Test dead flat finish for misting over dark colours.

Test dead flat finish on all wallpapers to ensure compatibility.

When applied over emulsion/latex paint, it is possible that Decorators Varnish can draw certain stains through the paint, which would not otherwise be visible.

Do not apply over uncured oils.
