Description
Mylands Mylac Lacquer is a low odour, fast drying single-pack water-based lacquer for wood surfaces and floors which has a high level of resistance to common household liquids. It is easy to apply, fast drying and suitable for use in domestic and some commercial environments. Mylac Lacquer is based on a polyurethane and acrylic (co-polymer) dispersion to give hard wear and resistance to liquid spillages along with a slip resistance surface. Mylac is designed for application to internal hardwood or softwood floors in domestic areas but is not suitable for use in areas where regular contact with water is experienced, such as bathrooms.
How to use Mylac Lacquer
- For new wood floors – The surface to be finished must be clean, dry and free from any contamination. Pre-sand the timber with 100 or 120 grit paper and remove sanding dust prior to lacquer application. For easy sanding and to minimise grain-raising apply a coat of Mylands Shellac Barrier Seal first.
- For previously finished floors – It is very important to remove all traces of wax or polish from the floor by washing thoroughly with White Spirit (when using White Spirit ensure the area has good ventilation) and to ensure that the previous coating is sound. Sand the floor thoroughly with 100 or 120 grit paper and remove all sanding dust. Ensure that the surface is clean and dry before applying Mylac lacquer – White Spirit is a slow evaporating solvent so will need several hours to dry (particularly in joints between floorboards). It is recommended to coat a test area with the Mylac to check adhesion of the lacquer to the previous coating before coating the entire floor. If in doubt about adhesion, sand the floor back to bare timber, ensuring all of the previous coating is removed, and treat as a new floor.
- If you want to stain the wood before application of Mylac Lacquer you can use Myland Light Fast Stains. Ensure the wood stain is 100% dry before application.
- For ideal application the ambient temperature should be a minimum of 15°C.
- If required, apply one coat of Shellac Barrier Seal as a primer and allow to dry for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Apply one coat of Mylac Lacquer using a brush, short pile roller or lambswool mop applicator.
- Allow to dry for approx 1½ hours at 20°C /60% RH. Lightly denib with 280 or 320 grit paper before applying further coats.
- For light traffic – apply 2 coats.
- For normal traffic – apply 3 coats.
- For heavy traffic – apply 4 coats.
- The surface to be coated must be free of any previous finish, wax, grease, moisture or any other contaminant.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Vacuum clean or wipe with a cloth or mop damped with water, for more heavily soiled floors use Mylands Floor Cleaner. Do not over-wet the floor. If the floor begins to show signs of wear it may be refurbished by application of a further coat of lacquer following the guidelines for previously coated floors above. Floors may be polished if desired.
Please note
Drying Time – Re-coat in 1.5 hours. Leave for a minimum of 24 hours before light traffic. Apply at 20°C / 60% humidity between coats. Inter-coat time may vary from this recommendation under conditions which differ from those recommended. 3 days recommended before subjecting to heavier traffic and replacing carpets, rugs, furniture, etc. Do not use Mylac Lacquer in conditions of extreme cold or high humidity – ambient conditions should not fall below 15°C during application and drying.
THINNING – Mylac should not normally require thinning but may be thinned up to 5% with water to suit some application methods.
COVERAGE – On average 8-12 m2 per Litre, dependent on type and absorbency of the timber.
CLEANING – Tools and application equipment should be cleaned with water containing a small amount of detergent.
STORAGE – This product must be protected from frost. Store at temperature above 5°C. Store away from direct sunlight.
Health and safety
Mylac Lacquer is non-flammable, so does not require special storage conditions.
