Description
Curator Antiquing Gel Black is a professional metal antiquing gel formulated to create deep blackened and aged finishes on mild iron, mild steel and brass. The gel consistency allows precise, controlled application, making it ideal for detailed metalwork, restoration projects and decorative finishing where even coverage is essential. Commonly used in antique restoration, architectural ironwork and traditional metal finishing, this black antiquing gel reacts with the metal surface to produce authentic aged effects while enhancing texture and depth. Suitable for both subtle toning and heavier antiquing, it is trusted by professional restorers, metalworkers and craftsmen for consistent, repeatable results on iron, steel and brass surfaces.
How to use Curator Antiquing Gel
- Remove any previous finish or lacquer from your item.
- Curator Antiquing Gel is a cold patination treatment that only reacts with the bare untreated surface of the metal.
- Use fine abrasive pads or 0000 steel Wire Wool to give a fine key prior to antiquing.
- It is recommended to use Cold Patination Pre-Treatment prior to antiquing. The pre treatment degreasing solution will quickly remove grease, oil and fingerprints from the surface of the metal. This helps to prevent giving a patchy and inconsistent result.
- Apply Curator Antiquing Gel direct to a wet surface and leave for 5 – 10 minutes.
- Wipe with a damp cloth or rinse with water.
- Repeat the application if the blacking is incomplete or uneven.
- as with all products, always test on an inconspicuous area to check colour, compatibility and end result.
- To ensure protection against corrosion, use Curator Protective Oil, Jade Oil, a finishing wax or appropriate lacquer to seal.
